Plot Synopsis

In this half-hour black comedy, an older opiate-addicted doctor narrates from his own notebooks, as he interacts with his younger self during turbulent experiences early in his career. The young doctor, fresh from Moscow University in 1917, lands a post at a small hospital in a remote village during the Russian Revolution. Dealing with superstitious and poorly educated patients, the doctor receives a brutal and panic-inducing introduction to his medical practice, causing the young doctor to struggle with doubts about his own competence. The story then unfolds through the eyes and narration of the older doctor, who is reminiscing about his early days as Soviet soldiers ransack his office in 1934 Moscow. A YOUNG DOCTOR'S NOTEBOOK, co-produced by Jon Hamm's own Points West production company, had its U.S. premiere on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 10pm ET/7pm PT.

Season 2, A YOUNG DOCTOR'S NOTEBOOK & OTHER STORIES, is again inspired by the works of Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov. Revisiting the small village of Muryevo in 1918, the Young Doctor is battling an all-consuming morphine addiction. Under the critical gaze of his older self, the Young Doctor struggles to cope with life in the hospital and the efforts of his medical staff, the Civil War and the distractions of a beautiful young aristocrat, Natasha. Ovation aired the U.S. premiere of A YOUNG DOCTOR'S NOTEBOOK & OTHER STORIES on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at 10pm ET/7pm PT.
