Plot Synopsis
Written and created by Russell T Davies, YEARS AND YEARS is a one-hour family drama series that takes an ordinary family and catapults them through the next 15 years. As society changes, faster than ever, the Lyons experience everything they hope for in the future, and everything they fear. They'll fall in and out of love and grow old, fall apart and come back together, while constantly looking forward. Each episode propels a year or two ahead, following the lives of Daniel, Stephen and his wife Celeste, sisters Rosie and Edith, Gran Muriel and the family's children, as they navigate a world made unstable by politics, the economy and technological advances.
The season opens on a night in 2019, as politician Vivienne Rook causes a scandal on live TV. At the same time, the Lyons family is united, as Rosie gives birth to a son. Brothers Stephen and Daniel gather at the bedside, with grandmother Muriel, and they wonder what life will be like for little Lincoln. Five years in the future, in the London of 2024, Stephen and Celeste worry about their daughter, Bethany, who declares herself as transhuman. Back in Manchester, Daniel's now married to Ralph, but is falling for Ukrainian refugee Viktor Goraya. When the Lyons gather for Muriel's birthday they're interrupted by a call from their missing sister, Edith. But she brings extraordinary news, and life for the Lyons is about to change forever.
YEARS AND YEARS had its U.S. premiered on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT on HBO.

HBO premiered the season finale of YEARS AND YEARS on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT. As 2029 begins, the BBC shuts down having had its charter withdrawn. Muriel blames the family and humanity at large for the various problems in the world. The family make a plan to free Viktor and end up liberating the camp and broadcasting footage to the whole country. Rosie breaks through the curfew fence around her estate with her catering van. Stephen confronts Woody and shoots him in the leg using a gun which he had purchased with the intention of killing himself. Edith collapses at the camp due to her illness. Viv Rook is charged with murder relating to the Erstwhile sites and the BBC is reopened. Rosie and Jonjo also get married, and have a son together named Danny. The timeline skips to 2034, where it is revealed that the events of the series were the retellings of Edith's memories, as she is in the process of uploading her memories to water molecules with Bethany's help. Edith's body dies, and the series ends with the whole Lyons clan unsure if Edith's consciousness was uploaded to Muriel's "Signor" virtual assistant.
