Plot Synopsis

Narrated and executive produced by Trevor Noah, each one-hour episode of this five-part documentary focuses on a different country -- Brazil, US, UK, France, and Qatar -- and how soccer teams and fans in that country face global issues through the sport. E WORLD ACCORDING TO FOOTBALL tackles women's rights, income inequality, labor rights, mental health, racism, nationalism and LGBTQ+ rights. Episodes include:

"Brazil" (Friday, December 1, 2023 at 8pm on Showtime): For forty years, women in Brazil were banned from playing soccer. Narrator Trevor Noah reveals how a new generation of female players has begun to make a name for themselves while also campaigning for women's rights across Brazil.

"United States" (Friday, December 8, 2023 at 8pm on Showtime): Unlike most countries, the US goes by a pay-to-play system in soccer, which means poorer players miss out and it keeps grassroots talent from making it to the highest level. Trevor discovers some brave soccer lovers who are bucking the system.

"UK" (Friday, December 15, 2023 at 8pm on Showtime): The Premier League is the ultimate cauldron of soccer competition with billions of fans watching each year. We from from former Premier League greats, including Tim Howard, about how the world's most scrutinized league can test your mental health.

"France" (Friday, December 22, 2023 at 8pm on Showtime): Trevor takes a deeper look into the complex relationship between race, immigration, nationalism, and soccer in France -- and wonders whether the spirit of soccer can truly be a salve for race relations in France and beyond.

"Qatar" (Friday, December 29, 2023 at 8pm on Showtime): A World Cup brings with it an immense global spotlight. Qatar spent billions to bask in that spotlight, but its plan went awry. Trevor investigates whether the world's biggest sporting event can bring about true social change.
