Plot Synopsis

Every four years since 1991 -- and after multiple regional qualification rounds -- 32 nations (previously 12 nations in 1991 & 1995; 16 nations in 1999-2011; and 24 nations in 2015 & 2019) from around the world travel to the host country, where teams compete in a round-robin group stage, followed by a single-elimination tournament for the top 16 teams (previously top 8 teams from 1991-2011).

On Friday, July 21, 2023 from 9-11pm ET/6-8pm PT, FOX premiered the opening match for the USWNT at the 2023 World Cup. Play-by-play announcer JP Dellacamera and USWNT FIFA Women's World Cup veteran Aly Wagner anchor the broadcast booth, alongside U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) Insider Jenny Taft.

The USWNT embarks on its journey to win a third consecutive World Cup title, a feat that no team -- women's or men's -- has ever done. Forwards Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe and defender Kelley O'Hara are playing in their fourth Women's World Cup. Two players are competing in their third consecutive World Cup roster: goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and midfielder Julie Ertz. Defenders Crystal Dunn and Emily Sonnett and midfielders Lindsey Horan and Rose Lavelle made their second World Cup roster and there are 14 players for whom this is their first Women's World Cup.

This summer (which is winter in New Zealand and Australia) the USA face World Cup debutantes Vietnam and Portugal in the group stage, along with 2019 Women's World Cup runners-up Netherlands. The USA plays the entirety of the group stage in New Zealand. The U.S. opens Group E play against Vietnam on July 22 at Eden Park in Auckland/Tamaki Makaurau (1pm local / 9pm ET on July 21 on FOX, Telemundo and Peacock), which also served as the host venue for the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 World Cup on July 20 when New Zealand beat Norway for its first-ever World Cup victory. The USA then faces Netherlands on July 27 at Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington/Te Whanganui-a-Tara (1pm local / 9pm ET on July 26 on FOX, Telemundo and Peacock), followed by Portugal on Aug. 1 at Eden Park in Auckland/Tamaki Makaurau (7pm local / 3am ET on FOX, Telemundo and Peacock).
