Plot Synopsis
Each year since 1999 -- except during some years when the Summer Olympics were staged (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) -- the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has held its mid-season All-Star Game, featuring a game between the best players. Plus, in 2010 the WNBA hosted a special mid-season showcase, featuring the USA Women's National Team playing the WNBA All-Stars in advance of the FIBA World Championship, which the league does not consider to be an all-star game.
From the first game through 2017, the event featured an East vs. West format. Then, for two years (2018 and 2019), the teams were captained by stars -- Candace Parker & Elena Delle Donne in 2018 and A'ja Wilson & Elena Delle Donne in 2019 -- who selected their teammates in an all-star draft. For the 2020 season, there was no game, because COVID-19 caused a shortened WNBA season during what would've been the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were delayed one year. For 2021, the format featured Team USA vs. Team WNBA as preparation for the Olympics. For 2022 & 2023, the game returned to teams captained by stars: A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. In 2024, the U.S. Olympic Team battled Team WNBA in preparation for the Paris Olympics.
