Plot Synopsis
This two-part series documents how Hawaii rose from the sea as a volcanic wasteland more than seven millions years ago, and how these islands transformed themselves into a paradise that has become an experiment in creation. In the first one-hour episode, "Land of Fire," WILD HAWAII explores how Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, has created an environment in which creatures have evolved to be different from their cousins the world over. Plus, the episode shows how 95 percent of the flora on these islands does not exist anywhere else in the world. The second 60-minute installment, "Secrets of the Deep," chronicles the islands' undersea rivers and the creatures that only thrive and survive in this spot on Earth. Plus, the program captures video of giant mantas flying through the sea, humpback whales fighting to the death and tiger sharks amazing researchers with their savagery.
