Plot Synopsis
Executive produced by Billy Ray Cyrus, STILL THE KING is a half-hour sitcom that follows Vernon Brown, a scandal-ridden, washed-up, one-hit-wonder who is kicked out of country music, only to emerge 20 years later as the second best Elvis impersonator. After crashing into an old country church outside of Nashville during a drunken bender, he is sentenced to return and perform community service. After serving 11 months and 27 days in a Tennessee prison, Vernon is released but ordered to 1000 hours of community service at a local church whose sign he damaged under the influence of drugs and alcohol. His parole officer, Mitch Doily, also surprises him with the fact that he owes 15 years' worth of child support for a daughter he's never met. Vernon immediately goes straight to the address of his daughter, Charlotte, and meets Debbie, a former one-night stand and the mother of his estranged daughter. Debbie has a live-in boyfriend, Ronnie, whose one dream in life it own a boat, and the smart and sarcastic Charlotte is reluctant to let her absentee father into her life. Vernon pretends to charm Debbie but she isn't having it, and refuses to let Vernon meet Charlotte until he pays his child support. Vernon then reports to the church he damaged to start his community service, but when he overhears the blind caretaker, Curtis, tell a parishioner about the new paid minister position, he decides to pose as the new preacher, planning on using the money to make his child support payments. Vernon enlists his friend Walt -- whom he met in jail and whose father played with Vernon during his heyday -- to help him con the church by taking over his community service hours, in exchange for bailing him out of jail. At the church, Laura Beth, the head of the church boosters, considers it her personal responsibility to guide the congregation's new preacher, but on Sunday morning, Vernon stands in front of his new congregation when the real preacher they were expecting opens the doors at the back of the church. Season 2 of STILL THE KING premiered on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 10-11pm ET/PT, as CMT debuted back-to-back new episodes. The season begins with Vernon fresh out of jail and determined to reclaim his position as a country music superstar while being present in the lives of his daughter Charlotte and her mother Debbie. Faced with the possibility of being a father to Debbie's unborn child, Vernon must balance his desires for fame and family. Plus, Vernon and Ronnie go head to head over which one will be the man of the house.
