Plot Synopsis
60 MINUTES offers hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news.
This series celebrated the start of its 46th year, when the 2013-2014 season debuted on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 7pm ET/PT on CBS, with these reports: Scott Pelley interviewing Secretary of State John Kerry, who described the concrete steps Iran would need to take to have sanctions removed that were imposed because of its nuclear program; Steve Kroft examining America's mental health system, which many believe is failing those with severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia; Norah O'Donnell interviewing author Bill O'Reilly about his book "Killing Jesus," which is not religious and contradicts the Bible.
60 MINUTES returned for its 47th season on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 7pm PT and 7:30pm ET (time may change), immediately following the conclusion of the football game between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. In the season opener, Scott Pelley goes to the heart of the fighting against ISIS in the northern regions of Iraq, where he speaks with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters who have battled ISIS. Then, Steve Kroft reports on an income tax scam that is getting out of hand because the IRS hasn't found a way to stop it.
Season 48 of 60 MINUTES premiered on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at 7:30-9pm ET/7-9pm PT on CBS. In the season opener, Russian President Vladimir Putin talks with Charlie Rose about his country's presence in Syria, the Islamic State group, conflict in Ukraine, and his feelings about President Obama and Americans. Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump talks with Scott Pelley about his campaign. Note that the start time in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones may by later -- and the episode may be 75- or 90-minutes long -- depending on the duration of the NFL football game that airs immediately beforehand. Plus, a story about Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo, which will be part of the two-hour West Coast broadcast, may or may not air in other time zones.
The 49th season of 60 MINUTES premiered on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 7:30-8:30pm ET/7-8pm PT on CBS.
60 MINUTES kicked off its 50th anniversary season on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT, with these three stories: Scott Pelley looking at Harvey's destruction in Houston; Lesley Stahl talking to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) about his health and politics; and Oprah Winfrey, in her first story for the series, exploring the political divide that's currently stirring America.
On Sunday, September 30, 2018 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT, CBS premiered the 51st season of 60 MINUTES. (Note that the start time in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones may by later, depending on the duration of the NFL football game that airs immediately before 60 MINUTES.) Sir Paul McCartney appears in his first 60 MINUTES profile, a report containing surprisingly intimate moments in which he shares rare details from the Beatles years and his subsequent decades as the most successful musician in popular music history. Sharyn Alfonsi interviewed McCartney as he prepared to tour for his new album, Egypt Station. It's also a few weeks away from the 50th anniversary of the band's classic album The Beatles, known as The White Album. The 76-year-old music legend -- who is credited with 29 #1 songs -- was candid when Alfonsi asked him if he and John Lennon ever complimented each other on their songwriting skills. Also in the season premiere, Barry Schultz, one of the opioid epidemic's most notorious felons, tell 60 MINUTES that he sees himself as a healer in a rare prison interview with Bill Whitaker. The mother of a man who overdosed on pills prescribed by Schultz disagrees. This is Whitaker's sixth report on the drug crisis, an epidemic that last year alone took the lives of more Americans than the Vietnam War.
Season 52 of 60 MINUTES premiered on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT on CBS. (Note that the start time in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones may by later, depending on the duration of the NFL football game that airs immediately before 60 MINUTES.) The season opener features three stories from domestic and foreign datelines. Norah O'Donnell's rare interview with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman leads the broadcast followed by Scott Pelley's look at the impeachment inquiry into the presidency of Donald Trump. The third segment is Bill Whitaker's report on the resurgence of perhaps man's most feared creature, the great white shark.
60 MINUTES returned for its 53rd season on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT on CBS. (Note that the start time in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones may by later, depending on the duration of the NFL football game that airs immediately before 60 MINUTES.) The three stories in the season premiere include: "The Battle for the Ballot" (Bill Whitaker reporting on the battle over rules for mail-in voting in Pennsylvania); "H.R. McMaster": (Scott Pelley interviews retired Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster in his first interview about his new book); and "Coach O and the Sideways Season" (Jon Wertheim is the correspondent for a story Ed Orgeron, who took the LSU Tigers to the national college football championship and now attempts to defend the title amid the coronavirus pandemic).
Season 54 of 60 MINUTES debuted on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT on CBS. (The start time on the East Coast may be later if the football game runs long, but 60 MINUTES will be shown in its entirety.) In the season opener, "9.11 The FDNY," while the nation remembers the terrorist attacks that killed thousands of Americans 20 years ago, New York City firefighters sent to rescue victims at the World Trade Center who survived will relive a life-changing experience that's now a part of who they are. "It's a day that will never leave you," Fire Department of New York Commissioner Dan Nigro tells Scott Pelley. Nigro and other firefighters who were at Ground Zero, many of whom fill the top ranks of the FDNY, recall the men, their sacrifices and the tragedy of losing 343 of their colleagues. This segment runs the full hour.
On Sunday, September 18, 2022, CBS premiered the 55th season of 60 MINUTES at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT, immediately after the NFL football game in the Eastern time zone. In the season opener, President Joe Biden discusses inflation, Russia's war on Ukraine, U.S.-China tensions, the midterm elections and more; also, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi sits down with Lesley Stahl. Scott Pelley sat down with President Biden in his first 60 MINUTES interview since taking office as the 46th president of the United States. Pelley spoke with Mr. Biden at the White House and in Detroit about inflation, Russia's war on Ukraine, U.S.-China tensions, the midterm elections and more. This is a double-length segment. Maria Gavrilovic is the producer. Lesley Stahl traveled to Tehran to interview Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the presidential complex in his first interview with a Western reporter. Stahl spoke with President Raisi about the impact of the United States' sanctions on Iran's economy, his thoughts on former President Trump and current President Biden, the Iran nuclear deal and more. Richard Bonin is the producer.
The 56th season of 60 MINUTES debuted on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT on CBS, immediately after the NFL football game in the Eastern time zone. This new episode features three segments: "President Volodymyr Zelenskyy" (Ahead of his visit to the United States, 60 MINUTES correspondent Scott Pelley speaks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the presidential offices in Kyiv as Ukraine continues its counteroffensive and Russia's war wages on.); "Into the Streets" (Lesley Stahl reports from Israel on Brothers and Sisters in Arms -- a group of military reservists, including commando soldiers and pilots, who are at the forefront of the huge rallies in the country.); "Prime Time in Colorado" (Correspondent Jon Wertheim heads to the field at the University of Colorado where new head football coach Deion Sanders, aka "Prime Time," is leading a college football shakeup.)
60 MINUTES returned for its 57th season on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 7:30pm ET/7pm PT on CBS, immediately after the NFL football game in the Eastern time zone. This new episode features three segments: "The Prosecution of Jan. 6," where Scott Pelley meets with some of those at the center of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol that stopped the count of electoral votes and triggered the largest prosecution in U.S. history; "Danger in the South China Sea," as Cecilia Vega sees firsthand just how dangerous it can be in the South China Sea when the Philippine ship she is traveling on gets rammed by China's coast guard; and Anderson Cooper talking with Dua Lipa about her journey from unknown songwriter to international sensation, with her songs streaming more than 45 billion times.

On Monday, October 7, 2024 at 8pm ET/PT, CBS premiered the one-hour 60 MINUTES election special for 2024. Bill Whitaker joins the Democratic ticket on the campaign trail for in-depth interviews with Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz to gain insight into their platform's priorities and values, and what the candidates believe voters should know. This is a double-length segment. Marc Lieberman and Rome Hartman are the producers. Scott Pelley addresses why the Republican ticket of former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance will not be participating in a 60 MINUTES interview for this election special. Segments also include:
"Belief in the Ballot": Scott Pelley travels to Arizona's Maricopa County, home to more than 60% of Arizona's voters and a critical battleground in a key swing state, to speak with the county's election leadership and hear from their critics as the election approaches. Aaron Weisz and Ian Flickinger are the producers.
"The Last Minute": Whoever wins the presidential race in November will inherit an expanding Middle East conflict. On the one-year anniversary of Hamas' terror attack on Israel, Lesley Stahl reflects on the aftermath, the consequences to the region and what it may mean for a new administration.
