Plot Synopsis

Even though they live in the White House, the Gilchrists deal with everyday family issues -- kids sneaking away for a night out, tweens dealing with middle school crushes, and children who are smarter than their teachers. President Dale Gilchrist is a heroic former Marine, but knows too well that the only thing harder than being Head of State is being head of the family. His second wife, Emily, is a street-smart First Lady with working-class roots who is eager to win over her stepkids. The President's out-of-control oldest son, Skip, returns home, where he is one of the administration's biggest liabilities, but also the glue that holds this family together. The other First Children are: Becca, the overachieving and perfectionist eldest daughter who helped raise her siblings; Marigold, the President's tough, youngest daughter; and Xander, the youngest son who is rebellious and always looking for ways to undermine authority. And Marshall Malloy, the White House press secretary, is almost like family. One of the show's creators, Jonathan Lovett, is a former speechwriter for Barack Obama. According to Josh Gad's account during a conference call on December 14, Jason Winer loved Josh's character in BOOK OF MORMON and wanted to bring it to TV -- and that Josh didn't initially want to even play the character of Skip but couldn't imagine watching anyone else have the role. NBC aired a sneak-peek episode of this series on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 9:30pm ET, just three weeks before the official series premiere on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 9:30pm ET.
