Plot Synopsis
Set in modern-day London (early 21st century), Sherlock Holmes is still brilliant, aloof and almost entirely lacking in social graces. And now he's set himself up as the world's only consulting detective, whom the police grudgingly accept as their superior. John Watson, a brave and resourceful army doctor, was somewhat shattered by service in Afghanistan. He finds himself in London, a bit of a lost soul, but he soon sees the world through Sherlock's eyes and the most unlikely but immortal friendship is about to begin. The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain -- they live at the same address of 221b Baker Street, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them. PBS aired the U.S. series premiere of SHERLOCK on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 9pm ET as part of MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!, with the U.S. premiere of Season 2 on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 9pm ET. SHERLOCK returned for its third season in the United States when PBS, as part of MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!, aired the U.S. premiere of Season 3 on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 9:58pm ET/PT (check local listings). Season 3 featured three, two-hour episodes: "The Empty Hearse" (Jan. 19); "The Sign of Three" (Jan. 26); and "His Last Vow" (Feb. 2). On Friday, January 1, 2016 from 9-10:30pm (check local listings), PBS aired the U.S. premiere of a brand-new SHERLOCK special, marking the first time that Sherlock has premiered in the US and the UK on the same day.. In "The Abominable Bride," Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson find themselves in 1890s London. Plus, beloved characters Mary Morstan, Inspector Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson also turn up at 221b Baker Street. In this new story, why is Thomas Ricoletti a little surprised to see his wife dressed in her old wedding gown? Because, just a few hours before, she took her own life... Mrs Ricoletti's ghost now appears to be prowling the streets with an unslakeable thirst for revenge. From fog-shrouded Limehouse to the bowels of a ruined church, Holmes, Watson and their friends must use all their cunning to combat an enemy seemingly from beyond the grave and the final, shocking truth about...the Abominable Bride! PBS aired the U.S. premiere of the fourth season of SHERLOCK on January 1, 2017 at 9pm (check local listings). The three-episode new season begins with the nation's favorite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge -- becoming parents for the first time. Toby Jones joins SHERLOCK for the second episode of the season, starring as one of Doyle's finest villains.
