Plot Synopsis

Using computer graphics, visual analogies and a cast of expert scientists, SECRETS OF THE EARTH explores our planet, uncovering new viewpoints of the world and revealing the science behind Earth's greatest natural phenomena. Each 30-minute episode of Season 1 featured a different topic, including: "Rain," unlocking the secrets of how rain is made and what water droplets are made of; "Tsunamis," exposing the science of a wave bearing down on land, highlighting the 2004 tsunami in Bali and Japan's 2011 tsunami; "Tides," unleashing little known facts about what drives tides; "Volcanoes," exploring how eruptions create localized weather phenomena like acid rain and violent volcanic lightning; and many more natural phenomena. This series uses interviews from scientists like: Costas Synolakis, a tsunami expert with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California; Simon Donner, a climatologist in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia; and many more experts.

SECRETS OF THE EARTH returned for its eight-episode second season on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 9pm ET/6pm PT on Weather Channel. Each one-hour program focuses on a single theme -- Death Traps, Abandoned Place, Strange Skies, Sinkholes -- with multiple segments in each program. The season opener, "Death Traps," highlighted quicksand, whirlpools and rip tides. Five months before the Season 2 premiere, Weather Channel ran on online contest, allowing viewers to vote on the topic for the finale, with "Animal Invaders" (41% of vote) beating out "Swarms and Stampedes" (35%) and "Only in Alaska" (24%). Season 2 features experts like: Matt Kuchta, Assistant Professor of Geology at the University of Wisconsin-Stout; Allen Gontz, Associate Professor of Coastal Geography and Geophysics at the University of Massachusetts Boston; and many more.
