Plot Synopsis
Directed by Alison Ellwood and Anoosh Tertzakian, SAN FRANCISCO SOUNDS: A PLACE IN TIME is a two-part documentary that celebrates the musical and artistic renaissance that exploded in the Bay Area between 1965 and 1975. During this period, festivals such as Monterey Pop, Altamont, Woodstock, and The Last Waltz put Bay Area acts into the spotlight, featuring the music of Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Steve Miller, and many more. The two-parter also highlights the influence of the city's concert impresario Bill Graham, who revolutionized the live music industry during that period. Episodes debut on at 10pm ET/PT on MGM+ on back-to-back Sundays:
Part 1 (Sunday, August 20, 2023): In free-thinking San Francisco of the '60s, bands form that change the landscape of music forever: Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin, Country Joe and The Fish, Steve Miller, the Grateful Dead, and countless others.
Part 2 (Sunday, August 27, 2023): Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Tower of Power, and the Doobie Brothers further diversify the landscape; Woodstock puts San Francisco artists on the world stage; despite a series of tragedies that strike the community, the music keeps on going.
