Plot Synopsis
After an impulsive decision cost him his career as an ER doctor, renegade physician Dr. William P. Rush went freelance. Now, he lives out of a hotel suite as an on-call doctor and traverses Los Angeles in his mobile office, a vintage Mercedes, discreetly serving clients -- no matter what the ailment -- as long as they can pay his cash-only premium. Though the hard-partying doctor with a penchant for popping pills doesn't make judgments on his less-than-squeaky-clean clients, he's not immune to the ugliness he encounters. He has no desire to change his life or how he lives it, until his conscience and his beautiful ex-girlfriend, Eve, begin to stir things up. His unlikely best friend, Dr. Alex Burke, is a doctor, husband, and father, who followed a more conventional path after med school. A family man on track to being Chair of Emergency Medicine, Alex should be buttoned up for good but can't help but get swept up in Rush's rebelliousness, and he'll do anything for his best friend Rush, even if it could get him into trouble. Helping to keep Rush on track is his brilliant assistant Eve. When Rush is too busy resuscitating hookers or taking shots with billionaire playboys to pay attention to earthly things, like car trouble or laundry, Eve steps in. She doesn't just manage his calendar; she runs his life. Despite her sharp-as-a-tack, take-no-crap attitude, Eve tends to find herself more emotionally invested in patients than Rush. In each 60-minute episode of RUSH, Rush treats one or two clients -- an up-and-coming MMA fighter with a past untreated medical condition and a person with a suspicious medical emergency at a social club -- while Alex tries to keep his job at the hospital; Eve and Manny, a street-smart drug dealer, explore their roles and boundaries in Rush's life; and Rush tries to fix his own life, including reaching out to his estranged father.
