Plot Synopsis
Set in Victorian London in the aftermath of Jack the Ripper's reign of terror, Inspector Edmund Reid heads up the notorious H Division, the toughest district in London's East End. Now, as imitators emerge and gangs terrorize, murder rates rise and each new murder could mark the return of The Ripper. Reid, who was one of the lead detectives on the Ripper case and is still haunted by the failure to catch London's most evil killer, and his partner, Sergeant Bennet Drake, are drawn into London's underbelly of prostitution, child gangs, and a white slavery ring. Plus, they must deal with a cholera outbreak and terrible secrets from their own histories. RIPPER STREET returned for its second season on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT on BBC America. As the century enters its final decade, recession stalks Great Britain. Its preeminent role in the world is under threat and nowhere is the bloated British Empire's problems felt more keenly than in its dark heart: the East End of London. The Metropolitan Police's H Division must battle new evils that threaten to disrupt the delicate peace struck at the end of Season 1. BBC America premiered Season 3 of RIPPER STREET on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT. Picking up in 1894, four years after the culmination of Season 2, the new season reveals a vivid and sensual descent into the lives of the men and women who must live on the violent streets of Whitechapel in late Victorian London. Four years have passed since Reid bayed for Drake to end the life of Jedediah Shine. Four years that have seen the crime-fighting axis of Reid, Drake and Jackson split and isolated from one another. Drake has left London for Manchester to become the policeman -- and man -- he felt he could no longer be in Whitechapel. He is an Inspector himself now. Jackson has reverted to the man Reid plucked out of the Tenter Street brothel, a two-penny, sawbones, clap-doctor. And Reid has succumbed to his own shame and isolation, policing Whitechapel with a level of forensic detail and dedication that leads Chief Inspector Fred Abberline to fear for his old friend's mental well-being. Meanwhile, Long Susan has made good on her threats to both Captain Jackson and the dying Silas Dugan -- she has separated from her husband, taken command of Duggan's criminal empire and turned it into a legitimate property empire of huge philanthropic ambition. But such aspirations are costly, as her loyal but scheming solicitor Ronald Capshaw knows only too well. All these resentments, fears and ambitions are soon forgotten, however, when two trains collide on the newly constructed bridge above Leman Street. It is a catastrophe which falls into Reid's world and demands explanation. His pursuit reunites him with Drake and Jackson and sets him on his own collision course with his past and with the secret crimes of Long Susan and Ronald Capshaw. Matthew Macfadyen returns as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, and Adam Rothenberg as Captain Homer Jackson. MyAnna Buring also returns as Long Susan in the eight-part season. Season 4 of RIPPER STREET premiered on linear television in the United States on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on BBC America. The new season sees Edmund Reid, Detective Inspector Bennet Drake and surgeon Captain Homer Jackson reunited to restore the peace of the blood-stained streets in London's East End. Picking up in in the summer of 1897 with Queen Victoria celebrating her diamond jubilee, Reid, who has retired from his detective work, finds himself drawn back to Whitechapel after discovering that an old friend is set to hang for a brutal murder he's convinced he hasn't committed. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Bennet Drake has now risen to the Head of H Division, holding a position of trust and status in Whitechapel. Moreover, he's now married to the love of his life, Rose Erskine. Also returning this season is MyAnna Buring as Jackson's wife Long Susan Hart -- now only weeks away from being executed for her part in the locomotive disaster that killed 55 people. Time is running out fast for Long Susan -- will her husband find a way to help her escape the death sentence before it's too late? Season 4 had its worldwide debut on Amazon on January 15, 2016. Two months later -- on March 7 -- Amazon announced that RIPPER STREET will return for a fifth and final season in 2017. RIPPER STREET returns for its fifth and final season on BBC America on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 11pm ET/PT. The powerful closing chapter picks up mere days after the grisly death of Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, which reunites his old friends, Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, surgeon Captain Homer Jackson and "Long" Susan Hart, to bring his murderer to justice. Last season introduced a new serial killer plaguing the streets of Whitechapel. Convinced that the murderer's cannibalistic crimes were being covered up by another party, DI Reid and DI Drake's investigation pointed to a trail of corruption that led them right to the heart of Scotland Yard -- specifically Assistant Commissioner Augustus Dove and his bestial brother Nathaniel Dove. During an attempt to bring down the Dove brothers, DI Drake lost his life to serial killer Nathanial, forcing DI Reid, CPT Jackson and 'Long' Susan on the on the run. Now, finding themselves on the other side of the law, revealing the truth about the unlawful siblings is not an easy task. With a barbarous killer on the loose and a corrupt lawman leading the police force, DI Reid is unquestionably facing his toughest and most dangerous challenge yet. An epic battle on the meanest streets imaginable has just begun... Will DI Reid finally be able to restore peace and justice in Whitechapel?
