Plot Synopsis

Hosted by Robert Osborne and author Dr. Eric Goldman, THE PROJECTED IMAGE: THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE ON FILM is a weekly, month-long showcase of movies, focusing on Jewish history and heritage as portrayed on screen. This collection features nearly 20 films, including four that are coming to the network for the first time. Dr. Goldman -- an expert on Yiddish, Israeli and Jewish film and adjunct professor at Yeshiva University -- assisted in curating the month-long programming event, which is divided into seven different themes:
- "The Evolving Jew" (Sep 2), with two versions of THE JAZZ SINGER -- Al Jolson's early sound film from 1927 and the 1953 remake.
- "The Immigrant Experience" (Sep 2), with Joan Micklin Silver's HESTER STREET (1975) and Barry Levinson's AVALON (1990).
- "The Holocaust" (Sep 9), with Orson Welles' THE STRANGER (1946), Edward Dmytryk's THE JUGGLER (1953), Sidney Lumet's THE PAWNBROKER (1964), and Stanley Kramer's JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961).
- "Israeli Classics" (Sep 16), with HILL 24 DOESN'T ANSWER (1955) and SALLAH (1964), two films appearing on TCM for the first time.
- "The Jewish Homeland" (Sep 16), with George Sherman's SWORD IN THE DESERT (1949) and Otto Preminger's EXODUS (1960).
- "Tackling Prejudice" (Sep 23), with four adaptations -- THE HOUSE OF ROTHSCHILD (1934), GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1947), CROSSFIRE (1947), and FOCUS (2001).
- "Coming of Age" (Sep 30), with THE YOUNG LIONS (1958), THE WAY WE WERE (1973), and HEARTS OF THE WEST (1975).
