Plot Synopsis
Originally titled the Blockbuster Bowl, the game was born in Miami, Florida, in 1990 with a matchup between Penn State and Florida State. The game continued in Miami for 11 years, with two more sponsors: Carquest (1993-1997) and Micron PC (1998-2000). With dwindling attendance, the Florida Citrus Sports obtained the rights to the game, bringing the event to Orlando. The first game in 2001 was called the Tangerine Bowl, a tribute to the name of Orlando's original bowl game. Mazda was the sponsor of the Tangerine Bowl in 2002 & 2003, followed by a series of title sponsors -- and name changes: Champs Sports Bowl, Russell Athletic Bowl, Camping World Bowl, and Cheez It Bowl. In the new College Football Playoff era, the bowl matches the top selection from the ACC (inclusive of Notre Dame) outside of the CFP series against the second selection from the Big 12 outside of the CFP series.
