Plot Synopsis
Based on the DC Comics characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, PENNYWORTH is a 10-episode series that tells the origin story of Bruce Wayne's legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier in his twenties who forms a security company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne, Bruce's billionaire father, in 1960s London. Initially, Alfred turns down an offer from Thomas Wayne, and instead accepts an assignment that positions him in the crosshairs of one of the East End's most dastardly figures. Then, Alfred accepts another assignment -- this time from photojournalist Martha Kane -- that turns increasingly dangerous. PENNYWORTH premiered Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT on EPIX.
The sophomore season of PENNYWORTH premiered on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT on EPIX. A year after the explosive events of Season 1, England finds itself embroiled in a devastating civil war, with the powerful, neo-fascist Raven Union, led by Lord Harwood threatening to control the entire country. North London remains one of the few resistance holdouts remaining. It's here in the West End Neutral Zone, that we find Alfred Pennyworth. After years in the British Army, his training with the SAS has taught him to be a cynical optimist -- expecting the worst, but knowing that he can handle it. Now running The Delaney, a black-market Soho club that welcomes everyone, regardless of their politics, Alfred, with his SAS mates, Deon "Bazza" Bashford and Wallace "Daveboy" MacDougal, is now in search of a way out -- before London, and his country, burns itself to the ground. And he's got his eye on America. After a 10-week break, PENNYWORTH returned with new episodes on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at 9pm ET/PT on EPIX. In the midseason premiere, "The Bleeding Heart," while Alfred and Daveboy run one last job for Gully in order to buy tickets to America, tensions ratchet up at Raven Union HQ between Harwood and his lieutenants.
Season 3 of the series, now titled PENNYWORTH: THE ORIGIN OF BATMAN'S BUTLER, premiered on Thursday, October 6, 2022 on a new outlet: HBO Max. The new season begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse -- ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains. HBO Max released three episodes on Oct 6, and a new installment debuted weekly through November 24.
