Plot Synopsis

Each year since 1941, The Peabody Board -- a collection of scholars, media professionals, and journalists -- has recognized excellence in broadcasting for a wide range of electronic media. Starting as the "Pulitzer Prize for Radio," THE PEABODY AWARDS expanded to include broadcast television in 1948, cable TV in 1981, websites in 2003, and blogs in 2012. Even though viewers have not seen the PEABODY AWARDS on TV for a while before Pivot aired the 2014 awards, the event had previously been broadcast by PBS and A&E respectively, most recently in 2003, with these networks showing the entire awards ceremony instead of a one-hour special. For the first time in the award's history, the 2015 PEABODY AWARDS were held as an evening gala event instead of a workday luncheon.

The 76th Annual PEABODY AWARDS, with Master of Ceremonies Rashida Jones, were held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Greek revival special-events palace Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Two weeks later, PBS and Fusion broadcast the 2017 event as a two-hour special on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 9pm ET (check local listings). The collaboration marks the first time the awards ceremony is telecast on both national broadcast and cable television. This year's special features acceptance speeches from most winners, including: Norman Lear accepting a lifetime achievement honor; Louis C.K. (for web series HORACE AND PETE); VEEP co-stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Timothy Simons; Ava DuVernay (for her documentary, 13TH); Pamela Adlon (for FX series BETTER THINGS); and more.
