Season 1 Season 2 Season 3 Season 6 Season 7
Plot Synopsis
Based on the memoirs of Piper Kerman, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK is a comedic drama that follows engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman, whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex results in her arrest and 15-month long detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiance Larry for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture, where she is forced to question everything she believes and form unexpected new alliances with a group of eccentric and outspoken inmates.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK returned for its second season on June 6, 2014, as Netflix released all 13 episodes of Season 2 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. The new season opens with Piper confronting the consequences of beating up Doggett at the end of the previous season, while facing new challenges with her world being turned upside down.
Netflix premiered Season 3 of OITNB late night Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 9:01pm ET, six hours earlier than originally announced. Piper, Red, Crazy Eyes, Taystee, Poussey, Sophia, Nicky, Daya, Gloria, Big Boo, Pennsatucky and all of Litchfield's ladies are back for more drama and laughter...as Alex makes her return and a new inmate, Stella (Ruby Rose), joins the gang. In Season 3, new business interests, spiritual movements and parental problems upend lives and ignite power struggles among Litchfield's residents and guards. The new season opens as Caputo's kinder, gentler new regime includes organizing a Mother's Day fair for the inmates that brings up a LOT of mixed feelings about family. Two months before the Season 3 debut, Netflix announced on April 15 that it had ordered a fourth season of the series, set to premiere in 2016.
The 13-episode fourth season of OITNB premiered Friday, June 17, 2016 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT on Netflix. Life at Litchfield is about to become more complicated. The new season picks up where Season 3 left off, with the inmates enjoying their short bit of freedom at the lake. But Piper's not at the lake, because she thinks she's running the joint after sending her ex-lover, Stella, to max last season.
Netflix released Season 5 of OITNB on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. In the 13-episode fifth season, the power dynamics at Litchfield shift dramatically as the inmates react to a tragedy. The new season, which takes place over the course of three days, opens as the standoff at the prison spirals into a full-blown riot, enterprising inmates take advantage of the confusion. Taystee confronts Caputo. Then, Maria convenes a special assembly in the chapel as the inmates plot their next move. Frieda makes use of the survival skills she learned as a kid. The season ends with "The Reverse Midas Touch," an episode directed by Laura Prepon. Sixteen months earlier -- on February 5, 2016 -- Netflix announced it renewed OITNB for three additional seasons, and that Jenji Kohan has committed to continue as executive producer and showrunner for seasons five, six and seven.
On Friday, July 27, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released the 13-episode sixth season of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. Picking up one week after the emergency response team stormed Litchfield Penitentiary, the ladies of Litch have been torn apart, literally and figuratively, as some of the women are sent to Litchfield Max, where a deadly rivalry between cellblocks has raged for decades. Now newbies they must navigate new rules and power dynamics, starting at the bottom, and getting hazed by inmates and tortured by guards. Friendships will be tested and new allegiances formed -- some by choice and others by circumstance -- as the women face a slew of charges from the riot. Will they take plea deals and turn on each other or band together and keep their bonds intact?
