Plot Synopsis
This techno thriller follows Elliot Alderson, a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night. When Mr. Robot, the mysterious leader of the underground hacker group fsociety, recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect, he must make the decision of a lifetime. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. As a senior network technician for cyber security firm Allsafe, Elliot protects corporate clients -- including the ubiquitous Evil Corp -- from security breaches and data theft. Originally from Washington Township, New Jersey, Elliot now lives alone on the Lower East Side. He suffers from crippling anxiety, which stems from memories of his difficult childhood. After being arrested for financial hacking, he has been attending court-ordered therapy for almost a year. Elliot, however, prefers self-medication by morphine, an addiction he mediates with suboxone. He obtains both from his next door neighbor, Shayla. His life changes when he's recruited by Mr. Robot, a mysterious figure with a murky history who has huge plans for the future. He recruits the members of fsociety to come together at the abandoned arcade -- and is relentless in his leadership of the team. Fundamental to fsociety's master plan, Darlene is the group's malware coder. Though biting and jaded, she becomes Elliot's confidante. He relies on her resilience and creativity for quick problem solving and fast hacks. As an Allsafe account executive, Angela has over five years of marketing innovation experience, but she lacks technological skills, relying on Elliot, her childhood friend and colleague, for assistance in critical situations -- in both business and her personal life. Angela's mother died when she was young, from cancer which developed after her exposure to toxic chemicals at a factory owned by Evil Corp, where Wellick was recently appointed Interim Chief Technology Officer after the Terry Colby hacking scandal. As CTO, Wellick relays the Evil Corp's technology strategy to investors, supervises software development processes, and identifies platforms for delivering services. A visionary, he has also laid the foundations for new security protocols and measures. His partner in social climbing and career mobility is his wife, Joanna, who goads him to more aggressive action and darker schemes. MR. ROBOT garnered more than 2.7 million views in its pre-linear launch across a wide array of digital platforms, and was named an official selection of the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival in April. In the season ender, "eps1.9zer0-daY.avi," one of Elliot's past hacks comes back to haunt him; meanwhile, Mr. Robot and Tyrell are missing. USA Network chose to delay the season finale for a week because the episode included a scene with similarities to the real-life murders that occurred on live TV in Virginia the morning of Wednesday, August 26 -- the day the finale was originally scheduled.
The 10-episode second season of MR. ROBOT premiered on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 from 10-11:30pm ET/PT on USA Network. The new season kicks off with a premiere night event that includes two back-to-back episodes -- presented with limited commercial breaks. Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the drama, the one hour, live HACKING ROBOT after show debuted at 11:30pm, immediately following the two-episode season premiere. In the premiere episodes, "Eps2.0_Unm4sk-Pt1.Tc" and "Eps2.0_Unm4sk-Pt2.Tc," Five/nine has changed the world; Elliot is in seclusion; Angela finds happiness at Evil Corp.; fsociety delivers a malicious payload.
