Plot Synopsis

Created by series star Scott Ray, MR INBETWEEN is a half-hour black dramedy series that centers on Ray Shoesmith, a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age. Even harder, because Ray is a criminal for hire, who, at age 40, is having something of a midlife crisis. His daughter Brittany is growing up, there are tensions with his ex-wife, he's been court ordered to attend anger management classes with a "bunch of wife bashers and child beaters," and work stress sometimes leads him to taking pills to sleep through the night. Besides all this, the world seems full of assholes strategically placed to antagonize Ray, and they need to be taught that they can't get away with disrespecting him. Ray's boss, Freddy, runs his business out of a strip joing, and is a guy who people go to if they need a hit put on someone or a debt collected. He feeds these jobs to Ray or one of his other contractors for a set fee. For Ray, Freddy is equal parts boss, friend, and father trying to calm his teenage son. Ray's best friend, Gary, is married to Tatiana and is trying to now live a more respectable life after working together with Ray a great deal in the past. Ray is the only person Gary is close to, besides Tatiana, and Gary is the only person connected to his work life who Ray can really trust. As such, they feel a great responsibility to look out for each other, and Ray wanting to protect Gary is the catalyst for the outbreak of snowballing violence. One good thing in Ray's life is Ally, a woman he feels may be out of his league. But Ally is drawn to Ray, even if she doesn't know the precise nature of his job. Ally, a paramedic, is a practical, pragmatic woman, and there's something in Ray's directness and dry demeanor that she appreciates. What she is increasingly alarmed by are his brief flashes of anger.

Ray Shoesmith was first introduced to audiences in THE MAGICIAN, a mockumentary written, directed, and starring Scott Ryan, who crafted the very funny and very dark world of the hitman. Originally shot over ten days at a cost of AUD $3,000, after a screening of a thirty minute cut down version at the 2004 St Kilda Film Festival, Ryan met filmmaker Nash Edgerton who took on the project on as editor and producer. Receiving further funding, the film was then released by Hopscotch Films in 2005 and went on to be nominated for a Film Critics Circle of Australia Award and an Inside Film (IF) Award in 2005. Edgerton has directed the six-episode season of MR INBETWEEN.

Season 2 of MR INBETWEEN premiered on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT on FX. Ray's work and personal life begin to collide and he finds himself struggling to keep both sides of his life from imploding. In the season opener, "Shoulda Tapped," Ray don't tap but he gives good advice. Sometimes you have to take the scenic route. Written by Scott Ryan; Directed by Nash Edgerton.

MR INBETWEEN returned for its third season on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 from 10-11:15pm ET/PT, as FX debuted back-to-back new episodes. In Season 3, Ray's world has contracted. Family life looks a little different as he quietly mourns the loss of Bruce, while figuring out how to care for his aging father, Bill. As Brittany grows into a young woman, she draws further away from Ray and comes closer to discovering the truth about who he really is. Things seem good with Gary and Dave, however since severing ties with former boss and confidant Freddy, Ray is working freelance and feeling a sense of isolation. With business booming, a new connection with criminal kingpin Rafael intensifies Ray's struggle and when sparks fly with new colleague Zoe, an unexpected tragedy makes Ray question both his career trajectory and his ethics. Fellow underworld figures dub Ray 'The Magician' for his uncanny ability to make things disappear. As his family crumbles, emotions rage and violence escalates, the blood on his hands may finally cause the magic wand to slip.
