Plot Synopsis

MALAWI WILDLIFE RESCUE is a one-hour documentary series that follows the work of American veterinarian Dr. Amanda Salb and her colleagues at the country's only wildlife rescue center. The team care for injured and abandoned animals until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and resources are hard to come by. So the team have to make do with what they can get, and often improvise. Power cuts are common and the rains can wreak havoc. The series is shot in the rainy season when the Center receives most of its orphans, so the staff have their hands full looking after baby vervet monkeys and baboons in particular. The Head of Animal Care is Dutch-born Alma Van Dorenmalen, who has years of experience and runs a tight ship. She prides herself in knowing every single one of the two hundred animals at the Center. Visiting British Vet Dr. Sophie Widdowson holds the fort whenever Amanda is called away from base. MALAWI WILDLIFE RESCUE had its U.S. premiere on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 9pm ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

On Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 8pm ET/PT, Smithsonian Channel premiered, "Catch Me If You Can," the season finale of MALAWI WILDLIFE RESCUE. Amanda and Mandy try everything at their disposal to help a snared hyena; the team's plan to release a troop of 13 monkeys is halted by last-minute surgery and some crafty escapees.
