Plot Synopsis

Based on "The Magicians" series of books by Lev Grossman, THE MAGICIANS is a one-hour drama series that centers on Quentin Coldwater, a brilliant but depressed college student from Brooklyn, NY, who learns that magic is real when he is offered admission at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, an exclusive graduate school for magicians in upstate New York. He and his twentysomething friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real -- and that it poses grave danger to humanity. Once ensconced in school, he quickly discovers the darker and terrifying side of magic, and the Brakebills students struggle to deal with the aftermath of a catastrophe that befalls the university. His friends and classmates include: Julia, Quentin's longtime best friend, who seemingly has everything -- a nice apartment, a respectable boyfriend, an acceptance to Yale -- but really wants the gift of magic, making her first foray into the mysterious world of Hedge Witches in Brooklyn; Alice, a phenomenally talented magician, who is painfully shy, but that all evaporates when she's practicing magic, allowing her to momentarily forget her past which is filled with some darkness; the perpetually annoyed Penny, for whom Brakebills may be the best thing for a loner like him -- but he'd never, ever admit it; the acid-tongued Eliot, who is one of the more established students at Brakebills and has an opinion on everything; and Margo, who is equally gifted in partying as she is magic, but hides her real story. On Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT, Syfy premiered a sneak-peek episode of THE MAGICIANS, which had its two-hour official series premiere on linear television Wednesday, January 25, 2016 from 9-11pm. Earlier in January, Syfy released the first episode of THE MAGICIANS on Syfy.com and On Demand cable, satellite and telco TV platforms starting Friday, January 8, and the episode was also be available on Facebook, YouTube, Perk TV and Roku the week of January 11.

The 13-episode second season of THE MAGICIANS premiered on Wednesday, January 26, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT on Syfy. Heading into Season 2, this group of unlikely heroes have been thrust into even more dangerous and unfamiliar territory, and must draw upon their novice skills to defeat a threat that could destroy the magical world itself. Driven by power, revenge and survival, they learn that those who entered the hauntingly beautiful world of Fillory will never be the same as those who leave. In the season opener, "Knight of Crowns," in the aftermath of their clash with The Beast, Quentin and his friends scramble for a new plan, while Julia and The Beast strike a dangerous deal.

The third season of THE MAGICIANS premiered on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 9pm ET/PT on Syfy. In the season opener, "The Tales of the Seven Keys," Quentin and Julia attempt to bring magic back. Eliot and Margo chafe under the fairy occupation. In the rest of the season, the core group embarked on the epic quest of the seven keys to restore magic after it was turned off. Dean Fogg negotiated the lives of his students, erasing their memories and giving each -- except Alice who is now imprisoned by the Library -- a new, magic-free identity. Even with their new identities, they are far from safe since inside Castle Blackspire, an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot.

Season 4 of THE MAGICIANS premiered on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT on Syfy. The previous season ended with The Monster finding a mind-wiped Quentin, and the fourth season picks up with The Monster seeking out the others, and something else... In the season opener, "A Flock of Lost Birds," Brian takes a friend out for ice cream. Sam is one week away from retirement. One day earlier -- on Tuesday, January 22 -- Syfy renewed THE MAGICIANS for a fifth season.

THE MAGICIANS returned for its fifth and final season on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT on Syfy. Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends - and the world. Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there's too damn much of it, and as the excess builds, an apocalypse looms. Can the magicians get their stuff together to save the world without Q?

On Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT, Syfy premiered the series finale of THE MAGICIANS. In the series ender, "Fillory and Further," Christmas comes early.
