Plot Synopsis

Investigative journalist Chris Hansen guides viewers through every twist and turn of an unfolding criminal drama, using his access to key witnesses, loved ones, survivors, neighbors and law enforcers to reach deep into the depths of the criminal killer's mind. KILLER INSTINCT follows Hansen as he pieces the jigsaw puzzle back together again with added insight drawn from visiting the scene of the crime, interviewing key players, and uncovering never-before-seen archived material. Each one-hour episode features a different killer, including: Anthony Sowell, a serial killer in Cleveland, who invited Vanessa Gay to a party at his home, she was raped, badly beaten but lucky to escape with her life when he miraculously let her go; Holly Harvey, and her 16-year-old lesbian lover, Sandy Ketchum, who stabbed Holly's grandparents -- Carl and Sarah Collier, a religious elderly couple -- in their suburban Atlanta home; Dr. Ali Salim, a respected local doctor with a reputation for saving lives, who also had a dark side, regularly seeking out prostitutes online, such as 23-year-old Deanna Ballman; Adam Mayes, who killed and buried Jo Ann Bain and her eldest daughter, Adrienne, in shallow graves, and was the focus of a manhunt because he still held captive the other two daughters -- 12-year-old Alexandria and 8-year-old Kyliah; Brenda Nicholas, a gypsy who had conned Sylvia Sutton out of her life savings of more than one million dollars and wants more, seeking the $60,000 coin collection of Patrick Fleming by killing him; and many more murderers. Season 2 of KILLER INSTINCT WITH CHRIS HANSEN premiered on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 9pm ET/PT on Investigation Discovery. The second season follows Hansen as he investigates every aspect of the motives and emotions behind some of the nation's most shocking murders. In the premiere episode, "Murder on Highway 23," Hansen chronicles every step of the puzzling disappearance of a young Ventura County, CA woman, Megan Barroso. After attending a Fourth of July party with friends in 2001, Barroso's car was found empty and lined with AK-47 bullet holes. With no drug addiction, no gang affiliation, and no flashy tendencies, law enforcement struggles to determine where Barroso is -- and just what happened to her. Through in-depth interviews with various experts and Barroso's own family members, Hansen paints the picture of an innocent woman whose life tragically intersected with a sociopath in this astonishing case. Season 3 of KILLER INSTINCT premiered on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT on Investigation Discovery. In the season opener, "Deadly Compulsive," in Longmont, CO, Tammy Tatum is brutally murdered right near her one-year-old daughter, Sadie. Now 24, Sadie reveals to Chris Hansen the shocking truth... that the killer was someone she knew her entire life.
