Plot Synopsis
A group of friends who own Paddy's Pub in Philadelphia constantly scheme to get ahead, by not-so-redeemable methods, that usually lands them in a world of hurt. When SUNNY returns for its eighth season in October 2012, the series opens with Dennis and Dee's Nazi grandfather coming back, forcing them to make a difficult decision and prompting Charlie and Frank to search for Nazi treasure. In later episodes, Frank tries to get a contract to collect the city's trash, Dee gets sadder and lonelier while trying to make her brother proud, and a FRIDAY THE 13TH-inspired Halloween show.
Season 9 debuted on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 10pm ET/PT on FXX, two days after the new network launched. The ninth season opened with Dee, who after years of resistance, starting to embrace the self-loathing qualities the guys have relentlessly beaten into her. A little more than a month later, on October 9 at 10pm ET/PT, SUNNY celebrated its 100th episode, as routine trip to a convenience store places the gang in the middle of an armed robbery.
IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA returned for its tenth season on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT on FXX. Last season, the gang broke Dee, saved the day (in their minds) and tried desperately (but failed) to win an award. This season, the gang tackles even bigger challenges like beating Wade Boggs' cross-country flight drinking record, getting their old friend Psycho Pete back to form, competing on a game show and conquering the world of online dating.
Season 11 of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA premiered on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on FXX. Last season, the gang crushed Wade Boggs' cross-country flight drinking record, killed Mac's dad, and started a cult. This season, the gang gets involved in even more insane adventures including a move to the suburbs, shooting a smut film, and defending themselves in court. Plus, in the season opener, "Chardee MacDennis 2: Electric Boogaloo," which was written by Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, the gang agrees to a truce while demonstrating Chardee MacDennis for an interested board game executive, but the nature of the game quickly sends things off the rails.
The twelfth season of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA premiered on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on FXX. This season, the gang goes to a waterpark, deals with a Wolf Cola PR nightmare, and actually spends a whole day tending bar. In the season opener, "The Gang Turns Black," after an electric heating blanket shorts out while the gang watches the Wiz they look in the mirror and realize they've turned black. They have to figure out how to get back to being themselves by going through all the classic body switch movie shenanigans they encounter.
On Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 10pm ET/PT, FXX premiered the thirteenth season of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA. Mac, Charlie, Dee, and Frank return to their duplicitous, scheming ways at Paddy's Pub, while Dennis takes on the new role of father in North Dakota. Last season, the Gang experienced new highs -- Mac acknowledged his sexuality and Charlie convinced The Waitress, his longtime target of affection, to move in with him -- and the lowest of lows -- Frank became the official beverage sponsor of a terrorist group, Dee helped a man reach rock bottom, and Dennis was investigated for murder. Even without Dennis, the Gang has its hands full as Charlie hopes to have a child with The Waitress, Mac sets out to understand his newfound sexuality, Dee takes feminism to new heights, and Frank goes to great lengths for the Gang to experience the greatest moment in Philadelphia sports history: an Eagles Super Bowl victory. The season opener, "The Gang Makes Paddy's Great Again," introduces Cindy, the new, ethnically diverse female member of the gang who can successfully pull off scams. Everything is working until Mac introduces a new member: a life-like sex doll that looks exactly like Dennis.
Season 14 of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA premiered on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT on FXX. In the season opener, "The Gang Gets Romantic," Mac concocts a scheme to attract single women to Airbnb Dennis' bedroom, while Frank and Charlie concoct similar plans to attract young, European coeds. But neither ad attracts their intended target. Written by Rob McElhenney & Charlie Day; directed by Glenn Howerton.
IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA returned for its fifteenth season on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 from 10-11pm ET/PT on FXX, featuring the first two episodes of the new season, making SUNNY the longest-running live-action comedy series in television history, bypassing THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE & HARRIET. In the seismic wake of Covid-19 and all things 2020, The Gang stands at a crossroads in a strange new world. The rules are changing quicker than anyone can keep up with, despite herculean efforts from Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Dee, and Frank to continue business as usual. Now, they must face the music and decide who they'll become in the cultural upheaval that is 2021. Across the span of eight episodes -- and the Atlantic Ocean in Ireland (in two episodes) -- we find them answer in a way only they could think to.
Season 16 of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA premiered with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 from 10-11pm ET/PT on FXX. In the new season, Mac battles with allergies and long-distance dating, Charlie takes on his long-forgotten sisters, Dee fights for rent control and women's athletics, Frank wrestles for his gun, and Dennis struggles to improve his mental health. In the season opener, "The Gang Inflates" (10pm), Dennis and Mac get into inflatable furniture to deal with the economy's inflation, while Dee tries to find a place to crash after being evicted by her greedy landlord and Charlie wants to pitch Frank his crypto/online investment idea. And in this inflation episode everything gets bigger -- Dee's desperation, Mac's lips, and even Charlie's apartment! Written by Nina Pedrad and directed by Heath Cullens. Then, in the second episode, "Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang" (10:30pm), after Frank shoots Dennis and Dee, they resolve to take Frank's gun away. Mac and Charlie go on a road trip with their moms to get their inheritances -- for Mac, it's letters written by his grandfather which have fallen into his Uncle Donald's hands, while for Charlie, it's a jar of teeth that is now in the hands of his sisters, Bunny and Candy. Written by Davis Kop and directed by Richie Keen.
