Plot Synopsis
IRON MEN follows iron workers in New York Locals 40 & 361, as they work together to erect Barclays Center in Brooklyn and rehab the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, while battling windy weather, surprise storms, and looming deadlines. Ironworking is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world, with iron workers walking thin steel beams hundreds of feet off the ground without any harnessing. While also showing their unbreakable bond with co-workers and their family lives, this four-episode, 30-minute first season documents what it takes for this special crew of men and women to start and finish the job at Barclays Center, the future Brooklyn home of NBA's Nets, and at Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which crosses the Harlem River between Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. In Season 2, IRON MEN goes inside the high-security construction at the World Trade Center site, where iron workers at Tower 4 and Tower 1 are in a race to complete the final floors and "top off" the buildings of this important construction job. Plus, this series continues to follow the men and women of New York's Local 40 and Local 361, as they build out the enormous Barclays Center sports arena and the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. The Barclays Center crew includes: George Berry, superintendent and a no-nonsense 30-year veteran, who is also on the executive board of the union and heads to the apprentice school after a normal work day, where he trains the new bloods in all facets of iron work; Tommy Cordray, foreman of the raising gang, who keeps "The Crazy Gang" on its toes by working as hard as the next man and constantly ribbing them with jokes and dressing downs; Mike Basso, connector for Tommy, who is usually 200 feet up in the air, walking across 6-inch beams to make sure that the iron is properly in position and correctly locked off; and Randy Occhipinti, an apprentice with the raising gang, who has been an ironworker for the last 18 months after previously being a licensed mortician. And the crew at Alexander Hamilton Bridge includes: 'Old Man' Jacob, a 29-year-old foreman with the demeanor of an older, wiser man, who lives in a Brooklyn apartment with four others during the week and travels six hours north to the Kahnewake Reservation to be with his wife, three kids and two stepchildren; Jimmy Robbins, a signalman with 26 years of experience, who is looking forward to retirement after helping with the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center, working on top of the Empire State Building antennae and annually assisting with the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree; Dave 'Meat' Miller, a adrenaline-junky connector with an A-type personality, who is a family guy, spending time with his three brothers and his dad, as well as a former sign hanger and aspiring chef; Chris Castiglia, Dave's partner connector on the raising gang, who spends his time off-the-job riding his Harley or researching tattoo parlors for the the perfect spot to have his latest, massive tattoo done; and Adrienne Donato, a second-year apprentice, who is also known as 'Kandy Kakes,' a member of the Gotham Girls roller derby team, where she is also the team's marketing manager.
