Plot Synopsis

Created by executive producer Issa Rae and consultant Larry Wilmore, INSECURE is a half-hour comedy series that looks at the friendship, experiences and tribulations of two black women, Issa and Molly, living in Los Angeles. These best friends must deal with their own real-life flaws as they attempt to navigate different worlds and cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. The series opens with Issa Dee, in the wake of her 29th birthday, reconsidering her dead-end relationship with Lawrence, her live-in boyfriend. Meanwhile, Issa's best friend, Molly, mourns her singledom and the state of her lady parts. Later, Issa uses an open-mic night as an excuse to reconnect with her ex. Over the course of the rest of the season, Issa attempts to figure out what she wants out of life and how to take control of it, while fumbling her way through this journey. Molly, a corporate attorney who appears to have everything together professionally, struggles inside as she looks for external ways to fix her life. Meanwhile, Issa's boyfriend, Lawrence, who has fallen victim to complacency, works to get his own act together. Frieda, Issa's overeager white co-worker, whose enthusiasm is both annoying and endearing, is at the crux of Issa's racial frustrations at work. Shot in and around South Los Angeles, INSECURE incorporates the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience, while featuring themes that Rae tackled in her book, "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl," and web series, AWKWARD BLACK GIRL.

Season 2 of INSECURE premiered on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 10:30pm ET/PT on HBO. In the aftermath of her breakup, Issa embraces the chance to explore the single-girl life, just as a challenging new work assignment puts her burgeoning friendship with well-meaning colleague Frieda to the test. Meanwhile, Molly's commitment to self-improvement forces her to confront her worth and future at the law firm, while facing the complex realities of relationships. And Lawrence makes a fresh start at both dating and his new job, but soon discovers that starting over may not be as easy as he thought.

The eight-episode third season of INSECURE premiered on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 10:30pm ET/PT on HBO. After her break-up with Lawrence, Issa tries to get her life back together, working hard to save and earn extra cash while crashing on Daniel's couch -- an arrangement that proves challenging, given their history. In the third season, Issa attempts to navigate her complicated relationship with Daniel, a childhood friend and on-and-off-again fling who's looking to take his music career to the next level. On the work front, she begins to question her role at the nonprofit "We Got Y'all" and Molly sets boundaries in order to concentrate on her dream job at a black-owned law firm, which she risks sabotaging via her insecurities and hang-ups.

INSECURE returned for its 10-episode fourth season on Sunday, April 12, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. Written by Issa Rae, the season opener, "Lowkey Feelin' Myself New," Condola guides Issa as she prepares for a mixer in her courtyard to pitch the block party to potential sponsors -- but tensions rise when they discover a mutual connection. Molly begins to develop unexpected feelings for Andrew. Then, in the second episode, "Lowkey Distant" (April 19), Issa and Condola decide to confront the elephant in the room head-on, causing Lawrence to get uncomfortable. In search of a real connection, Molly struggles to get Andrew to open up during a carefully architected date night.

The fifth and final season of INSECURE premiered on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. Season 5 continues to follow the crew as they evaluate their relationships, both new and old, in an effort to figure out who and what comes with them in this next phase of their lives. In the season opener, "Reunited, Okay?!," pulling up to her ten-year college reunion in style as an alumni panelist, Issa's self-doubt quickly surfaces, while Molly -- still reeling from her breakup -- struggles to get out of her own head. As the crew takes the opportunity to reflect, old wounds remain tender.

HBO premiered "Everything Gonna Be, Okay?!," the series finale of INSECURE from 10-10:43pm ET/PT. As she and her friends try to make time for each other no matter what, Issa looks back on all it took to get to where she is today.

HBO Max released "The End," a 65-minute special that takes an look at the making of the final season and the cultural impact of INSECURE, featuring interviews with ssa Rae, Jay Ellis, Yvonne Orji, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, Wade Allain-Marcus, Kendrick Sampson and Christina Elmore. This special makes its linear television debut on HBO on Monday, December 27, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT.
