Plot Synopsis

Using 3D graphics, archive and specially shot footage, IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING explores the history of pioneering modern-day mega structures. Behind every seemingly impossible marvel of modern engineering is a cast of historic trailblazers who designed new building techniques, took risks on untested materials and revolutionised their field. Each one-hour episode details how one giant structure, record-beating building, or cutting-edge ship, train or plane is built and how it works. The series premiere revealed how engineers built the Rion Antirion Bridge, a structure that can withstand an earthquake.

Season 2 of IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING premiered on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 9pm ET/PT on Science Channel. The season premiere, "NASA's Rocket to Mars," goes behind-the-scenes of NASA's most audacious spacecraft build in history: the Orion Spacecraft. Currently being constructed to transport humans further than ever before, it will be the most powerful rocket that has ever left the face of the Earth. The futuristic technology to transport humans to Mars relies on a long history of engineering achievements. From the invention of the long range radio at the beginning of the 20th century, to the Apollo modules in the 1960s, this episode will pay homage to the feats that made the Orion Spacecraft possible.

Science Channel premiered the third season of IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT. Kicking off the third season is an in-depth look at China's Five Hundred Meter Aperture Telescope (FAST), the biggest and most sensitive radio telescope on the planet that can receive radio signals from billions of light years away. Later episodes feature these engineering wonders: the International Space Station; the Tesla's 5.3-million square foot factory in Fremont, CA; the Panama Canal, which is undergoing a $5.25 billion expansion and redevelopment; Halley VI Research Centre, which is situated on a floating ice shelf 900 miles from the South Pole; the U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ships: Independence Class; and Airlander 10, a hybrid airship that has a low carbon footprint and can access remote areas.

Season 8 of IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING premiered on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT on Science Channel. The season opener, "Seattle Super Bridge," examines a floating bridge in Seattle, WA, one of the longest structures in the world.

After a three-month break, IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING returned with new episodes on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel. In the Season 9 opener, "World's Largest Plane: Stratolaunch," test pilots and engineers embark on the first flight of the largest airplane ever built: the Stratolaunch, a one-of-a-kind aircraft designed to transport rockets, spacecraft, and experimental hypersonic planes into the stratosphere.

The tenth season of IMPOSSIBLE ENGINEERING premiered on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel.
