Plot Synopsis

The series is narrated through flashbacks in the year 2030 as Ted Mosby tells his children how he met the love of his life. The story begins in 2005 when Ted's two best friends, Marshall and Lily, announce their plans to marry each other. At this point Ted realizes he should start searching for his true love before it's too late, and the womanizing Barney acts as his wingman. Ted dates Victoria, Robin and then Zoey, but each time it looks like the relationship might go to the next level, something happens to sabotage it. And then there's that yellow umbrella. It belongs to the mother and appears often enough to provide hints and clues about her identity, but it sometimes gives a false trail -- like when Stella accepts Ted's marriage proposal, only to leave him at the altar. At the end of Season 7, Lily gave birth to Marvin. Plus, the gang convinced Ted to go after the girl that got away, and he rode away into the sunset with Victoria -- but only after leaving a note for her jilted fiancee. Season 8 opens with Robin and Barney's wedding day, but Robin is very anxious about the pending nuptials. Will Robin and Barney actually get married? Is Victoria really the one for Ted? Now that they have a baby, how will Marshall and Lily change? Most importantly, the Mother made a cameo appearance in the Season 8 finale. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER returned for its ninth and final season on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT with back-to-back new episodes. Season 9 takes place over the course of Barney and Robin's wedding weekend, when the lives of the gang change dramatically: Ted is about to move to Chicago, Marshall and Lily are about to move to Rome, and Robin and Barney are about to become husband and wife. Season 9 guest stars include: Tim Gunn (as himself), Roger Bart, Wayne Brady, Sherri Shepherd, and Ellie Kemper.

On Monday, March 31, 2014 at 8pm ET/PT, CBS showed the one-hour series finale of HIMYM.
