Plot Synopsis

CIA officer Carrie Mathison is convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody, who had been missing and presumed dead, was a set-up and may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. Brody was actually captured in Iraq and held as MIA since 2003 in Afghanistan. After being held for eight years, he was brought back a hero. But is he telling lies or even admitting to everything that happened? He surely won't recount his experiences to his wife Jessica, trying to protect her and their two children, Chris and Dana, from his horrible experiences. While Brody tries to avoid his past and Mathison looks for the con, can she find the holes in his story while convincing her boss Saul Berenson to let her continue her investigation? Brody came home a different man, but is he working for a different Man? In Season 1, Brody worked with al Qaeda mastermind Abu Nazir, putting him in position to blow up Vice President William Walden and other diplomats -- except that his suicide vest malfunctioned and Brody decided to use his new political position as Congressman to change America's destructive military and diplomatic policies from the inside.

In Season 2, will his Muslim faith be made public now that he's been vetted as a potential candidate to be the next Vice President? Plus, he'll find himself pulled in all directions -- whether it's VP William Walden, fellow Marine Capt. Mike Faber, or Nazir -- with every lie threatening to bring Brody down. Meanwhile, in Season 1, Carrie shared romantic walks and had a brief fling with Brody, allowing her to learn important details about his past and personality. She knew he was in position at the State Department to execute a dangerous mission, even though nobody else believed her. After Tom Walker, the rogue jihadist ex-Marine, shot political fixer Elizabeth Gaines, Brody was sequestered with other VIPs, forcing Carrie to rush to Brody's home to get his daughter, Dana, to call her father and convince him not to do whatever he had planned. But then nothing happened. Carrie, entirely unaware of the vest malfunction, really doubted herself and the effects of her bipolar disorder, entered psychiatric care and submitted herself to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Now, in Season 2, it's six month after the CIA fired her. She lost key memories during ECT, and she lost even more credibility when Brody's plan did not come to fruition. But, in the wake of a recent Israeli air strike against Iran, an informant, the abused wife of a Hezbollah commander, insists she will only speak to her one-time CIA handler: Carrie Mathison. Carrie's life is about to change again when Saul and David Estes arrive on her doorstep asking for help. As the situation at home and abroad escalates, Carrie and Brody's worlds will collide yet again, deepening a relationship built on lies, suspicion and longing, which resulted in an explosion at Langley, killing more than 200. While the world thinks Brody is to blame, Carrie helps him get across the border before returning to Langley to see Saul, who was delighted to see that she was not killed in the blast.

On Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT, Showtime presented the Season 3 premiere of HOMELAND, just hours after a Noon-6:30pm ET/PT marathon of the final six episodes of the previous season. In the third season opener, Brody remained at large, and Saul plotted a counterstrike on the terrorists connected to the bombing at the end of Season 2. Meanwhile, a Senate committee was investigating the CIA bombing, which focused on Carrie because the committee chair, Senator Andrew Lockhart, blames the CIA for the bombing and is determined to reveal why they were unable to prevent it. In the meantime, Carrie will try to save her career and her own sanity while trying to prove that Brody is innocent. Finally, with her husband still at large, Jessica helps the family through their crisis, while coping with Dana's behavior and starting therapy.

Season 4 of HOMELAND premiered on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT, with Showtime airing back-to-back new episodes. As last season drew to a close Carrie, pregnant with the late Brody's baby, got promoted to a new post overseas, while Saul Berenson contemplated his future outside of the CIA. Season 4 finds Carrie assigned to one of the most volatile and dangerous CIA stations in the Middle East where she is back on the front lines in the war on terror.

HOMELAND returned for its fifth season on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime. Season 5 picks up almost two years after Carrie Mathison's ill-fated tenure as Islamabad station chief and the Embassy attack. Struggling to reconcile her guilt and disillusionment with years of working on the front lines in the "war on terror," Carrie finds herself in a self-imposed exile in Berlin, estranged from the CIA and working as the head of security for a German philanthropist. She's building a new life, but her peace is threatened when her boss forces her towards the dangerous world she left behind. Season 5 marks the the first time an American TV series was shot entirely in Germany.

Season 6 of HOMELAND premiered on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime. After she thwarted a terrorist attack in Berlin, season six picks up several months later and finds Carrie Mathison living in Brooklyn, New York. She has begun working at a foundation whose efforts are to provide aid to Muslims living in the U.S. Season 6 tackles the after effects of the U.S. presidential election, with the entire season taking place between election day and the inauguration. It's a strange, transitional time in the halls of government filled with anxiety and different competing interests, where a very fragile and complex transfer of power takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming president-elect. Guest stars this season include Hill Harper, Robert Knepper, Patrick Sabongui, Jake Weber, and Dominic Fumusa.

Season 7 of HOMELAND premiered on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime. At the end of the previous season, following an assassination attempt on her life, President Keane broke her promise to Carrie by arresting 200 members of the intelligence community -- including Saul Berenson -- without bringing charges against them. As the new season begins, Carrie has left her job in the White House but is living with her sister Maggie in D.C. to take on the Keane administration and secure the release of the 200. Joining the cast this season is Morgan Spector.

The eighth and final season of HOMELAND premiered on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT on Showtime. Carrie Mathison is recovering from months of brutal confinement in a Russian gulag. Her body is healing, but her memory remains fractured -- which is a problem for Saul, now National Security Advisor to the newly ascendant President Warner. The top priority of Warner's young administration is an end to the "forever war" in Afghanistan, and Saul has been dispatched to engage the Taliban in peace negotiations. But Kabul teems with warlords and mercenaries, zealots and spies -- and Saul needs the relationships and expertise that only his protege can provide. Against medical advice, Saul asks Carrie to walk with him into the lion's den -- one last time.

On Sunday, April 26, 2020 from 9-10:10pm ET/PT, Showtime premiered "Prisoners of War," the series finale of HOMELAND. Saul and Carrie's final mission comes to a conclusion.
