Plot Synopsis

Haplin, Minnesota ("Happy Town") once had a series of unsolved kidnappings, but has enjoyed relative peace for the last five years. Until now. Has the elusive "Magic Man" returned to claim another victim? While many believe the "Magic Man" is responsible for the bizarre abductions, Haplin has a number of other mysteries. During the investigation, many of the town's prominent citizens come under scrutiny as their own motives, secrets and personalities are peeled back -- one layer at a time. Meet the people of Haplin: Tommy Conroy is a small town deputy under the wing of his dad, long-time popular Sheriff Griffin Conroy, but has never taken charge of Haplin's law enforcement. Now he must balance his investigation of the new spate of crimes and his life with his family -- wife Rachel and daughter Emma; John Haplin lives on the other side of town and runs the local bread factory. His daughter was one of the kidnapping victims, his mother Peggy is a mysterious matriarch, and his son Andrew is romancing the Conroy's babysitter, Georgia; Henley Boone drops in on Haplin since her mother used to vacation here. While looking for her family's past, she uncovers so much more -- like the graffiti of a halo with a question mark under it; Merritt Grieves runs a charming but irrelevant film memorabilia shop, The House of Usher, and has his way with the lively widows residing at the Meadows Boarding House with him; and a number of colorful characters, like Big Dave Duncan and the nefarious Stiviletto brothers.
