Plot Synopsis
Based on Joe Lansdale's Southern noir book series, HAP AND LEONARD is an event series about an unlikely pair of best friends and martial arts experts who struggle through misadventure to stay on the right side of the law in 1980s East Texas. Hap Collins is a white working class laborer who spent time in federal prison as a young man for refusing to be drafted into the military and serve in the Vietnam War. Now In his late thirties, he is just barely making ends meet picking roses on an East Texas plantation but he has a weakness for Southern women. His colleague and lifelong best friend is Leonard Pine, a six-foot five, gay, black Vietnam vet with a hot temper. Leonard was raised by his uncle who shunned him after learning he was gay leaving Hap as his only support in the not so progressive rural South. After Hap and Leonard lose their jobs, Hap's seductive ex-wife Trudy resurfaces with a deal they can't refuse: a simple get-rich-quick scheme that snowballs into bloody mayhem, providing a country twist on the classic mystery thriller. Meanwhile, a menacing pair descends upon the duo's hometown. HAP AND LEONARD: MUCHO MOJO, the second season of this series, premiered on Wednesday March 15, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on SundanceTV. In Season 2, Hap and Leonard find themselves in mucho-trouble as they unravel a murder mystery with more twists and turns than an East Texas highway. The story begins with a skeleton; Trudy's missing ashes; a pissing match with a neighborhood drug dealer, and a piece of MeMaw's fresh baked pie. When Leonard is arrested for a murder he didn't commit, Hap and attorney Florida Grange must work to clear his name. The only things standing in their way are Hap's unquenchable thirst for Florida; a serial killer; bad mojo; and themselves. The third installment of this scripted anthology series, HAP AND LEONARD: THE TWO-BEAR MAMBO, premiered Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 10pm ET/PT on SundanceTV. The six-part drama takes inspiration from the third installment of the popular book series, "The Two-Bear Mambo," by author Joe R. Lansdale. Principal cast James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams return as title characters Hap and Leonard, and are joined by an ensemble cast including Louis Gossett Jr., Corbin Bernsen, Andrew Dice Clay, Laura Allen and musician Curtis Harding. Tiffany Mack and Cranston Johnson also return as series regulars. Set once again in East Texas just before Christmas of 1989, Hap and Leonard scramble to locate Florida Grange, who has gone missing in the Klan-infested town of Grovetown. Once again at the center of an impending storm of Biblical proportion, Hap and Leonard find themselves at odds with a cast of characters so tough they could chew the bumper off a pickup truck, including a possibly corrupt sheriff, and the leader of the Caucasian Knights. The boys learn that the good guys don't always win, and nobody beats Mother Nature.
