Plot Synopsis
Executive produced by Tina Fey, GREAT NEWS is a half-hour comedy series that takes place on set and behind the scenes of "The Breakdown," a fictional national cable show, where Katie Wendelson is a smart, ambitious news producer. Unfortunately for her, after 30 years of being a stay-at-home mom, Carol decides that it's never too late to follow your dreams and lands an internship at her daughter's news show. This is Katie's worst nightmare, until she comes to realize that with her biggest cheerleader at her side, she and her mom both might just make it after all. Sitting in the co-anchor chair at "The Breakdown" is Chuck Pierce, the blowhard, difficult-to-please news desk veteran. Chuck intimidates everyone on staff except for Carol, who uses her polished mom skills to deal with him. Alongside him is Portia, the young, very hip co-host who brings a different perspective to old-fashioned journalism. Leading the news team is Greg, the dashing young executive producer. Katie's closest friend at the office is Justin, the laid back video editor who has seen it all and is always more than happy to dole out his zen-like advice. Rounding out the newsroom is Beth, the creepy resident meteorologist who is far from your stereotypical weather girl. GREAT NEWS premiered on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 9-10pm ET/PT, as NBC debuted back-to-back new episodes. Season 2 of GREAT NEWS premiered on Thursday, September 28 at 9:30pm ET/PT on NBC. In the season opener, "Boardroom Bitch," "The Breakdown" gets a new boss, Diana St. Tropez (guest star Tina Fey), a tough business lady with big plans to bring their outdated news program into the 21st century. Katie is thrilled since this is exactly the kind of strong, professional female role model she hoped for, but Carol is immediately wary of this new influence in Katie's life. Meanwhile, Chuck has trouble adapting to Diana's idea for a new panel segment of screaming pundits.

On Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 9:30pm ET/PT, NBC premiered "Early Retirement," the Season 2 finale of GREAT NEWS. Diana St. Tropez (guest star Tina Fey) returns with good news for "The Breakdown" staff: Fenton Pelt (guest star Jim Rash) has agreed to drop his lawsuit on the condition that Chuck Pierce deliver a humiliating on-air apology and resign from news forever. Chuck, defeated, agrees, until Portia reminds him why he got into journalism in the first place. With Chuck's final broadcast approaching, Katie convinces Carol to reunite for one last job, and they race against the clock to find the one person in New Jersey who could disprove Fenton Pelt's claims and save the show. Nat Faxon also guest stars.
