Plot Synopsis

Based on the acclaimed mystery novels by James Runcie, a charismatic young clergyman, Rev. Sidney Chambers, and a down-to-earth cop, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, team up to fight crime in the beautiful hamlet of Grantchester in 1953. When one of his parishioners dies in suspicious circumstances, Sidney turns investigative vicar, partnering with Keating, a man two inches shorter than he'd like to be, with scuffed shoes and hair not as familiar with a comb as it should be. Troubled by nightmares and recurring flashbacks to the time he served in the Scot's Guards, Sidney is the moral compass of the drama with a desire to put right the wrongs of the past. He conscientiously undertakes his parish duties at the church of St Andrew and St Mary's, and has the ear of his congregation who respect his unique moral insights and dry humor. Sidney's housekeeper, Mrs. Maguire, keeps him in check and does her best to keep his chaotic vicarage presentable and respectable, while his gorgeous black Labrador puppy, Dickens, keeps him company. Plus, Amanda Kendall, whose love for Sidney, although reciprocated, doesn't have a future, as her father wants her to marry an aristocratic beau. PBS aired the U.S. premiere of GRANTCHESTER on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 10pm (check local listings).

PBS aired the U.S. premiere of Season 2 of GRANTCHESTER on Sunday, March 27, 2016 at 9pm (check local listings), as Reverend Sidney Chambers and Inspector Geordie Keating return for another round of mysteries. Together, the sensitive vicar and the hard-bitten cop make perfect crime-solving partners. Still unresolved from last season is Sidney's love life. Handsome, worldly-wise, and virtuous, he should be an ideal catch. And at least one very promising female companion turns up in the new series. But will Sidney scare her away with his unconventional taste for jazz, blood-spattered crime scenes, and a married woman? The new season's cases include a shocking charge of sexual assault that turns into a homicide investigation implicating a pillar of the community; an apparent suicide from the college spire that takes on Cold War overtones; a confession to murder in which the alleged victim is still very much alive; a haunted stable with links to the Holocaust; and more. In the season opener, Sidney is suspected of murder -- but so are a fellow priest, photographer and classmate of the victim.
