Plot Synopsis

Every January the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognizes achievements in television and motion pictures by conferring Golden Globe Awards. In 2013, the HFPA honors recipients in 25 categories -- 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television. In 1943 foreign journalists, led by the correspondent for Britain's Daily Mail, formed the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFCA), and the HFCA presented its first award in early 1944 in an informal ceremony at 20th Century Fox, where it honored Best Film (THE SONG OF BERNADETTE), Best Actress (Jennifer Jones for THE SONG OF BERNADETTE) and Best Actor (Paul Lukas for WATCH ON THE RHINE). Only seven years after forming, a schism amongst members in 1950 caused the HFPA to split into two groups -- the HFCA and the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood -- with each group conferring its own award. The separation was short-lived, and in 1955 the two groups reunited as the HFPA. Shortly after its reunion, in 1955 the HFPA first recognized achievements in television with a new category, Best Television Show, honoring the following programs: DINAH SHORE, LUCY & DESI, THE AMERICAN COMEDY and DAVY CROCKETT. The Golden Globes soon found their way to televisions across America. In 1958 the Globes were first televised locally in Los Angeles, and the Globe Awards made a national debut in 1964 on a special segment of THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW. This event did not have a host until 2010, when Ricky Gervais hosted the first of three consecutive years. In February 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported on ethical issues and lack of diversity at the HFPA, causing stars to seek change by boycotting the organization and returning awards. In January 2022, there was on ceremony, and the HFPA announced award winners on social media. The GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS returned to television in January 2023.
