Plot Synopsis
Each year since 1990, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has presented the GLAAD Media Awards to recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. Founded in 1985 in response to the "New York Post" covering HIV and AIDS in a "grossly defamatory and sensationalized" way, a small group of journalists and writers formed GLAAD, with the first reported meeting on November 14, 1985. Less than five years later -- on Sunday, April 29, 1990 -- the inaugural GLAAD Media Awards were held in NYC atop the Time & Life Building, with Phil Donahue winning the Media Person of the Year for his continued coverage of the LGBT community. More than 15 years later -- on July 24, 2005 -- Logo became the first network to broadcast the GLAAD Media Awards. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was virtual in 2020 & 2021.

Hosted by Margaret Cho, the 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards began streaming on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 on Hulu. The ceremony took place 2.5 weeks earlier -- on Thursday, March 30 -- at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Fletcher and Orville Peck perform.
Christina Aguilera receive GLAAD's Advocate for Change Award for her decades-long allyship in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people. Bad Bunny is given GLAAD's Vanguard Award for championing queer visibility in Latinx culture. Actor Jeremy Pope is honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, for breaking barriers across multiple industries as an out-LGBTQ media professional. Drag Story Hour receives Special Recognition at the GLAAD Media Awards.
