Plot Synopsis

GIRLS is a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of twentysomething girls in New York who aren't sure what they want from themselves -- or from each other. Hannah is a unique mixture of self-entitlement and self-loathing -- she wants to be a writer, but doesn't write; she wants a boyfriend, without the obligations of a relationship; and she wants a job, but doesn't want to work. Hannah's roommate and best friend, Marnie, is her polar opposite -- she has a boyfriend, a real job, and strict rules about friendship, but this type-A personality is unwilling to admit just how lost she is. Jessa is apt to put crazy ideas in Hannah's head about living a Bohemiam lifestyle, but Jessa's lack of fear, her extensive travels and her multiple boyfriends belie her own insecurity. Jessa's roommate and cousin, Shoshanna, is an NYU student obsessed with women's issues, gluten-free foods and sexcentric self-help, and the others often underestimate her because she's suburban and innocent. Together, these four girls try to figure out life -- and boys. When Season 2 opened, Hannah was seeing a new guy, but still felt responsible for Adam, her bed-ridden ex, as he recovered from the fateful accident that ended Season 1. Disappointed at work, the recently single Marnie needed the support of her best friend and former roommate, yet the distance between them seemed greater than ever. Jessa returned from her honeymoon, ready to plant new ideas in Hannah's head. Newly experienced, Shoshanna struggled to navigate the challenges of a shaky relationship with Ray. GIRLS returned for its third season on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO, with back-to-back new episodes. In the season opener, Hannah and Adam hosted a dinner at their apartment, Marnie was still upset about her breakup with Charlie, divorced Jessa was still in rehab, and Shoshanna alternated between nights of sexual freedom and academia, following her break-up with Ray. HBO premiered the Season 4 premiere on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT. In the new season, Hannah has left New York to attend the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop, hoping to become a more serious writer, while facing uncertainty in her relationship with Adam. Back in the city, Marnie is pursuing a music career, trying to balance her personal and professional relationship with Desi. New graduate Shoshanna is interviewing for jobs and struggling to sort out her relationship with Ray. And Jessa is trying sobriety through AA, but her knack for creating drama is undiminished. Season 5 of GIRLS premiered on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. Hannah is putting her writing ambitions aside for the moment, continuing to work as a teacher alongside new boyfriend (and nice guy) Fran. Marnie micromanages her upstate wedding to Desi, but soon begins to realize she needs more space, literally and figuratively. Working towards becoming a therapist, Jessa tries to stay on the straight and narrow while managing a budding relationship. Shoshanna thrives at her new job in Japan, where she flirts with her boss, despite a long-distance relationship back home. The season opens with the wedding day, as Marnie tries maintain the facade of the breezy bride, and tasks Shoshanna with kicking out Fran, Hannah's date, so the girls can get ready. Banished to the boys' den, Fran has an awkward moment with Adam. A dejected Ray steps in to help Desi with his wedding-day jitters. Returning guest stars for the fifth season of GIRLS include: Rita Wilson as Marnie's mother; Peter Scolari and Becky Ann Baker as Hannah's parents; Jon Glaser as Laird; Gaby Hoffman as Adam's sister, Caroline; Aidy Bryant as Abigail; and Jason Ritter as Scott. New guest stars this season include: Corey Stoll as Dill; Lucy Liu as Detective Mosedale; and Frank Wood as Oscar. The sixth and final season of GIRLS premiered on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on HBO. In the new season, these four familiar friends attempt to get closer to becoming the women they always envisioned -- even as life sometimes gets in the way. Enjoying new success as a writer after participating in "The Moth," Hannah gets an assignment that could change her life. Divorced from Desi, Marnie seeks to remain independent, but her self-absorption could undermine a budding relationship with Ray. New couple Jessa and Adam embark on a creative project that could become a source of contention. Shoshanna flourishes at a marketing agency, but realizes her friendships may be holding her back. New guest stars this season include: Riz Ahmed as Paul-Louis; Matthew Rhys as Chuck Palmer; and Tracey Ullman. In the season opener, "All I Ever Wanted," riding a wave of newfound career success, Hannah gets an assignment to write a story about a female surf camp in the Hamptons, where she meets Paul-Louis, an uncomplicated waterski instructor. Hoping to break her old patterns post-divorce, Marnie tells Ray he needs to spend more time at his own place, but Adam and Jessa's intensity drives him out of the apartment.

On Sunday, April 16, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT, HBO premiered the series finale of GIRLS. In the 35-minute series ender, "Latching," written by Lena Dunham & Jenni Konner & Judd Apatow, Hannah embarks on a new chapter.
