Plot Synopsis

Directed by Chen Xiaoqing, FLAVORFUL ORIGINS is a quarter-hour documentary series that delves into China's culinary secrets and cooking techniques and native ingredients from various regions of the country.

Season 1 focuses on the delectable world of Chaoshan cuisine, exploring its unique ingredients and revealing the stories of the people behind its creation. Each 15-minute episode focuses on a different type of food, including olives, marinated crab, bean paste, radish, and more. On Monday, February 11, 2019 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released 20 episodes of FLAVORFUL ORIGINS.

On Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released the 10-episode second season of FLAVORFUL ORIGINS. Season 2 explores the diverse flavors of China's Yunnan province and get to know the cooks and ingredients that shape its rich culinary tradition. Each 15-minute episode focuses on a different ingredient, including: ham, pickled vegetables, lacquer seed oil, rice cake, salted flour, and more.

The 10-episode third season of FLAVORFUL ORIGINS debuted on Friday, November 20, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, as Netflix released the entire new season. From lamb skewers to the glutenous niang pi, the cuisines of Gansu province offer remarkable flavors as layered as its history. Season 3 opens in Jiayuguan city, where mutton tallow envelops lamb skewers with layers of flavor. In the Ganjia pastures, herders cook lamb with tripe using hot stones.
