Plot Synopsis
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD lives in the same universe as THE WALKING DEAD, but this new series explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family in a different part of the United States. The story occurs at a time when the world was changing rapidly for reasons unknown, before anyone understood exactly what was happening, when life as everyone knew it was upended and altered in ways no one could have ever imagined. Set in the City of Angels where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and her boyfriend, English teacher Travis Manawa, have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and the dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories. The outbreak reveals a past to Madison that she had tried to bury, and now, in this new world, she can't hide who she really is. She sent her son Nick, a 19-year-old drug addict, to rehab several times but nobody can force him into recovery, but now the apocalypse may provide him an opportunity to rebuild his life. His sister Alicia, a model student, was close to giving up on him when the apocalypse hit, and she has her sights set on escaping Los Angeles. Madison's boyfriend Travis, the group's patriarch, maintains a relationship with his ex-wife and resentful son, Chris, while trying to become a father to Madison's children. Chris, a rebellious teenager, often feels that he and his mother are his father's forgotten family, and he resents his father's insistence on bringing the two families closer. The special 90-minute series premiere of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD made television history, delivering 10.1 million live/same day viewers and becoming the #1 series premiere in cable television history for total viewers and all key demos. The episode delivered 6.3 million adults 18-49.
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD aired its second season of 15 episodes in two parts, beginning with the first of seven episodes on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC. The remaining eight episodes will air later in 2016. The series began production on Season 2 last month in the Baja peninsula in Mexico at Baja Studios, home to some of the greatest ocean-set films in recent years. Season 1 left off with Madison, Travis and their extended family taking temporary shelter in Strand's gated estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean. As civil unrest continues to grow and the dead take over Los Angeles, Strand prepares to escape to "Abigail," his large yacht moored offshore. FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned for the second half of Season 2 on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC, consisting of eight episodes. In the rest of Season 2, the Clark, Manawa and Salazar families fracture. The events that took place at the Abigail compound have set all of the heroes adrift. Now they must forge their own paths to survive. Alicia struggles with Madison's refusal to let Nick go, while Travis tries to protect Chris from the apocalyptic darkness that threatens to consume him. Strand is lost in grief, and the power of Daniel's dark past leaves Ofelia disillusioned about their survival and ability to rebuild new lives. In the mid-season opener, "Grotesque," Nick's steadfast search for answers leads him into a deadly dog-eat-dog landscape. A dark piece of his past is uncovered.
The third season of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD premiered on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 9-11:10pm ET/PT, as AMC premiered back-to-back new episodes. The first half of the season consists of eight episodes airing over six weeks, with a mid-season finale of two back-to-back episodes on Sunday, July 9. As FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returns for Season 3, the families will be brought together in the vibrant and violent region formerly known as the U.S.-Mexico border. International lines done away with following the world's end, the characters must attempt to rebuild not only society, but family as well. Madison has reconnected with Travis, her apocalyptic partner, but Alicia has been fractured by her murder of Andres. Madison's son is only a few miles from his mother, but Nick's first action as a leader saw him and Luciana ambushed by an American militia group -- the couple escaped death, Luciana was shot, and Nick no longer feels immortal. Recovering both emotionally and physically, Strand has his sights set on harnessing the new world's currency, and Ofelia's captivity will test her ability to survive and see if she can muster the savagery of her father. Returning cast Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Mercedes Mason, Colman Domingo and Danay Garcia as Luciana. Joining the cast as series regulars for season three are Dayton Callie, Daniel Sharman and Sam Underwood, who will play the Otto family, founders of a survivalist organization who prepared for the fall of democracy, but didn't anticipate the rise of the dead, as well as Lisandra Tena as Lola Guerrero. FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned for the second half of Season 3 with two back-to-back episodes on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 9-11pm ET/PT, In the second half of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD Season 3, the Clarks and Ottos have secured an uneasy truce with the Nation. Former enemies must find a way to survive together. Tension mounts at Broke Jaw Ranch as their militia is decimated, resources are scarce and the Dead are encroaching. The Gonzalez Dam, a source of life, is a larger prize to the south. Strand has hit rock bottom and needs a partner to harness the world's only currency if he is going to be resurrected. Meanwhile, Daniel has become el soldado again and bides his time in service to Lola and the dam, but hasn't given up the ghost of Ofelia. In the mid-season premiere, "Minotaur," in the aftermath of the Clark family's actions, new leadership assumes control of the Ranch. Daniel assists Lola in the distribution of water. In the second episode, "The Diviner," with the Ranch dangerously low on resources, Madison and Walker leave in search of a solution. Nick and Alicia struggle to keep the peace.
Season 4 of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD premiered on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 10:10pm ET/PT on AMC. Season 4 sees the world of Madison Clark and her family through new eyes -- the eyes of Morgan Jones, joining the story from the world of THE WALKING DEAD. The characters' immediate past mixes with an uncertain present of struggle and discovery as they meet new friends, foes and threats. They fight for each other, against each other and against a legion of the dead to somehow build an existence against the crushing pressure of lives coming apart. There will be darkness and light; terror and grace; the heroic, mercenary, and craven, all crashing together towards a new reality. On Sunday, August 12 at 9pm ET/PT, AMC premiered the second half of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD's fourth season, consisting of eight episodes. The first half of Season 4 began with one figure huddled around a campfire, and ended with nine. Characters who started their journeys in isolation collided with each other in unexpected ways and found themselves in one of the last places they ever expected to be...together. In the back half of the season, they explore who they are now -- as individuals and as part of the greater group -- and how they forge ahead. They find themselves pitted against new adversaries - human, walker, and even nature itself. Theirs is a journey wrought with danger, love, heartbreak, loss, and ultimately, hope. In the summer premiere, "People Like Us," Morgan tries to help Alicia and the fractured group of survivors as a storm brews.
The fifth season of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD premiered on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC, immediately following an all-day marathon (8am-8pm) of encore episodes from Season 4. In the new season, the group's mission is clear: locate survivors and help make what's left of the world a slightly better place. With dogged determination, Morgan Jones leads the group with a philosophy rooted in benevolence, community and hope. Each character believes that helping others will allow them to make up for the wrongs of their pasts. But trust won't be easily earned. Their mission of helping others will be put to the ultimate test when our group finds themselves in unchartered territory, one which will force them to face not just their pasts but also their fears. It is only through facing those fears that the group will discover an entirely new way to live, one that will leave them forever changed. In the season opener, "Here to Help," the group faces unexpected dangers when they land in uncharted territory in search of survivors. After a three-week break FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned with new episodes on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC. Season 6 of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD premiered on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC. The sixth season explores what has become of the unlikely family once united by a mission to help those in need. After being torn apart by Virginia (Colby Minifie) and her Pioneers, the group is now dispersed across her far-reaching settlements. Morgan's last message at the end of season five implored the group to "Just Live" and this season we'll see what that means to each of them. Some will find the stability and opportunity within Virginia's communities to be intriguing, some will sink into darkness, while others will fight back against what has been forced upon them. Life behind Virginia's walls will test each and every one of them in different ways, forcing them to define who they are in this new world. After a 4.5-month break, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned with new episodes on Sunday, April 4, 2021 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT on AMC+, followed by its linear television debut one week later at 9pm ET/PT on AMC on Sunday, April 11. Subsequent episodes are first released on Thursdays on AMC+, followed three days later by their linear TV debut on Sundays on AMC. As Morgan's bid to free the remaining members of the group becomes bolder, Virginia grows increasingly desperate to find her sister and protect the settlements from forces working inside and outside her walls. The second half of season six reveals the impact of what living under Virginia's control has done to each person in this group, who once saw themselves as a family. New alliances will be formed, relationships will be destroyed, and loyalties forever changed. When everyone is forced to take sides, they discover the meaning of, "The End is the Beginning."'
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned for its seventh season on Sunday, October 10, 2021 on AMC+. Teddy brought about his vision of "The End" when he detonated nuclear warheads across the Texas landscape, but it will be up to those who survived to decide what "The Beginning" will look like. And they'll have to do it in a world devoid of light and hope, where the outside air is just as deadly as the walkers they face. The survivors will find out who they really are and what they're really made of. Some will rise to the occasion, some will find new purpose, and some will redefine themselves -- even if it comes at a terrible cost to those they once considered family. Aisha Tyler, who directed an episode of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD in Season 6, is set to appear in Season 7. The Season 7 debut episode made it linear television debut one week later on Sunday, October 17 at 9pm on AMC. On Sunday, April 17, 2022 FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned for its Season 7 mid-season debut, as AMC+ released two new episodes in the morning and late that night AMC aired the mid-season premiere episode, "Follow Me," at 9pm ET/PT. In the second half of Season 7, months have passed after the nuclear blast and the only one thriving is Victor Strand. Having built a fiefdom, he callously selects who will have a chance at life. The other members of the group have suffered immensely, but out of that, has come a fierce determination to live, even if it means taking Strand's Tower by force and continuing the search for Padre, a mythical place no one is sure really exists. Alicia now the reluctant leader to Teddy's former followers, is plagued by a mysterious illness and the repercussions of her past actions. Morgan trying to maintain hope that he will be reunited with his family, knows Alicia is key to their survival. With Alicia declaring war, Strand's paranoia and personal vendettas grow, and with that, new threats emerge from all sides.
The eighth and final season of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD premiered on AMC on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT. Season 8 begins after the conclusion of Season 7, when Morgan's and Madison's hopes to rescue Mo from PADRE did not go as planned. Now, Morgan, Madison and the others they brought to the island are living under PADRE's cynical rule. With the characters demoralized and dejected, the task of reigniting belief in a better world rests with the person Morgan and Madison set out to rescue in the first place -- Morgan's daughter, Mo. After a four-month break, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD returned for its Season 8 mid-season debut on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT on AMC. A new episode debuts weekly on Sunday until the two-part series finale on November 19. Now that Shrike and her influence are gone, Madison sets sights on transforming PADRE into the safe haven the old Stadium was meant to be. But in doing so the island becomes a target as well as a beacon as word of Madison and this land of resources spreads, attracting unwanted attention that puts PADRE back in peril and questions whether our heroes even deserve to save it.
