Plot Synopsis
Held annually each year since 1996 -- except in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic -- the FAMILY FILM AWARDS honors excellence in family oriented film making, with awards presented to G and PG rated feature movies and TV shows. The inaugural event, hosted by Beau Bridges, Anna Chlumsky, and Joey Lawrence, was broadcast on Thursday, August 22, 1996 from 8-10pm ET/PT on CBS. The nominees were selected by a blue-ribbon panel appointed by the World Film Institute, and the public voted online to determine the winners in 15 categories. Bob Hope was honored with a lifetime achievement award. Starting with the 26th annual event, the program became the FAMILY FILM AND TV AWARDS (January 27, 2024), presented to both television series and movies, with a panel of industry leaders, celebrities, and the readers of "Popstar! Magazine" voting for their top choices in 11 different categories.
For the 20th annual FAMILY FILM AWARDS, George Hamilton and Diane Ladd announced the nominees at a press event held at the Hilton Universal City Hotel on August 27, 2015. Award winners were announced at the closing day of the 69th Annual Cannes Film Festival (May 22, 2016). Tim Conway was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award for Television. In addition, thereafter this award was to be known as the Tim Conway Family Film Lifetime Achievement Award for Television. Diane Ladd was the recipient for the Lifetime Achievement Award for Film.
Winners of the 21st Annual FAMILY FILM AWARDS were announced on May 21, 2017 during the 70th Cannes Film Festival, and the awards ceremony was held later in the year on December 11 at The Beverly Hills Women's Club. Jimmy Rooney was set to emcee the ceremony
The 22nd FAMILY FILM AWARDS were held on September 27, 2018 at the Hilton Universal Hotel Ballroom. Margaret O'Brien earned the Lifetime Achievement Award for Film, while Michael Learned was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Television. Mike Glazer, Mike Black and Matt Walker were tapped to emcee the event.
The 23rd FAMILY FILM AWARDS took place on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the Hilton Universal Hotel Ballroom, where Jerry Mathers and Marla Gibbs respectively took home the male and female Lifetime Achievement Awards for Television, while Andy Madadian won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Music. Richard Halpern was scheduled to be the emcee.
Making its return to television, the 24th FAMILY FILM AWARDS debuted on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 8pm ET on ReelzChannel, nearly two months after being taped at the Universal Hilton Hotel on Thursday, February 25, 2021. Dean Cain hosted the event, which honored Ann-Margaret with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Michelle Yeoh with the Global Lifetime Achievement Award. Nominees and award winners in each category were selected by a Blue Ribbon Panel made up of entertainment industry executives.
On Monday, December 26, 2022 from 8-10pm ET/PT, The CW premiered the 25th annual FAMILY FILM AWARDS, hosted by Dean Cain and Laura McKenzie. A panel of industry leaders, celebrities, and the readers of Popstar! Magazine voted for their top choices in 20 different categories, covering both both television series and movies. The winner of each category received their award during the broadcast, which was taped more than two months earlier on October 15.
