Plot Synopsis
As told from the perspectives of Christine Rosa, an impassioned caseworker with The Innocence Initiative, and Adam Page, an equally passionate district attorney and political rising star in Philadelphia, this one-hour scripted drama explores the personal cost of morality, ambition, ethics, politics, and race in today's justice system. Christine's passion in life can be traced back to her father, whose potentially wrongful conviction for murder when Christine was a young girl in part ignited her quest to bring justice to the powerless. Adam is the youngest DA in the history of Philadelphia, and more than a decade ago during the newsworthy Butler trial, he learned just how far he was willing to go to win. Now, he must decide which means more to him: finding the truth, or protecting his reputation. Twelve years ago, the Butler family was attacked in their Philadelphia home and all but the youngest daughter were brutally murdered. The senseless deaths of this affluent African-American family -- seemingly at the hands of two white construction workers, Terry Kucik and Jared Bankowski -- threatened to ignite a racial firestorm in the City of Brotherly Love. Adam, himself an affluent African-American man, made a name for himself by securing convictions for both men, leading to the death-penalty ruling for Bankowski. Today, Christine believes Bankowski was wrongly convicted of the heinous murders and struggles to stop his impending execution, while tirelessly working to exonerate Kucik. In her search for the truth, she uncovers evidence that puts her at odds with Adam, who will do everything in his power to uphold the verdict and keep his reputation intact. His actions put a strain on his marriage to Billie, a powerhouse corporate attorney at a crossroads in her own life. Plus, Adam's father Isaiah, the Police Commissioner of Philadelphia, is a huge believer that the ends justify the means, and he'll be a major resource for Adam in his search for the truth behind the Butler murders -- as long as the investigation doesn't put the Page family at risk. As Christine continues her quest, her colleague at the Innocence Initiative, Clarke Rylance, an old law school buddy of Adam and Billie's, is inspired by her passion -- but unnerved by her disregard for the rules -- and he'll have to decide how far he's willing to go to support her. Faced with the question of one man's guilt or innocence and motivated by their own personal histories, each struggles between wrong and right -- their own divide -- in the quest for justice in a case that nearly divided an entire city. THE DIVIDE premiered on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 9-10:50pm ET/PT, as WEtv showed a double episode for the series debut.
