Plot Synopsis

Produced by Amy Poehler, DIFFICULT PEOPLE is a half-hour comedy series that follows the personal and professional exploits of two aspiring NYC comedians in their mid-30s, Julie Kessler and Billy Epstein, who blame the world around them for their misery, but have no self-awareness about how they constantly get in their own way. As best friends living in The Big Apple, they aren't living up to their potential and hate just about everything and everyone -- except for each other -- which means their typical, irreverent behavior lands them in some very awkward situations. On Wednesday, August 5, 2015, Hulu released the first two episodes of the series. On Tuesday, July 12, 2016, Hulu released the first two episodes of the 10-episode second season of DIFFICULT PEOPLE. During Season 2, Julie and Billy continue to search for fame, to diminishing returns. Billy embarks on the journey of finding a boyfriend while Julie tries her best to avoid a deeper commitment to Arthur and not become her mother. Julie and Billy continue to have contempt for the world around them while remaining loyal to each other, and, as they get in their own way, learn no lessons. In the season opener, "Unplugged," Julie works to impress Jewish TV writers as Billy strives to be his rich boyfriend's kept man; meanwhile, Marilyn makes a video will. Guest stars include: Sandra Bernhard as a prominent TV showrunner; John Mulaney as Billy's boyfriend; and Tina Fey as herself. Then, in the "Kessler Epstein Foundation" episode, Billy and Julie decide to create their own version of the Ice Bucket Challenge to gain internet fame. Guest stars for this episode include: Nathan Lane as himself; AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL winner Nyle DiMarco as Billy's boyfriend; and Megan Hilty as Marilyn's OCD patient. Other guest stars in Season 2 include: Julianne Moore, Debbie Harry, Amy Sedaris, Joel McHale, REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK's Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan, Mark Consuelos, Fred Armisen, Method Man, and more. Season 3 finds Julie and Billy remaining each other's best friends while still their own worst enemies. Julie embarks on a season long quest for happiness, after she learns if she tries to up her anti-depressants anymore her blood will be a Slurpee, trying in the process everything from meditation to ayahuasca. Meanwhile, Billy begins to sour on New York, just as he begins to fall for his first real boyfriend. Marilyn lands a book deal, and Arthur is forced to commute to the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre in Jupiter Florida, where PBS has moved all of its productions. Hulu premiered the third season of DIFFICULT PEOPLE on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, releasing three episodes.

On Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Hulu released the Season 3 finale of DIFFICULT PEOPLE. In the season ender, "The Silkwood," Billy moves to Los Angeles with Julie's help. Marilyn writes a best-selling memoir, also with Julie's help. Changes at the cafe include a new waiter, and eventually, new ownership. Arthur's office in Florida meets an untimely demise. Guest stars include Tony Hale as himself, Amy Poehler as Flute, Andy Cohen as himself, Riki Lindholme as Hostess, Lucy Liu as Veronica Ford and John Cho as Todd.
