Plot Synopsis
Set in Germany in the 1980s, Season 1 of this series, title DEUTSCHLAND 83, follows Martin Rauch, as the 24-year-old East German native is sent to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service, leaving behind Annett Schneider, his fiancee and childhood sweetheart, back home in Kleinmachnow. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army using the alias Moritz Stamm, he must gather the secrets of NATO military strategy. Under the tutelage of his aunt/boss Lenora, the Cultural Attache at the East German Embassy, and Tobias Tischbier, his mentor in the HVA (Foreign Arm of the East German Secret Service), Martin finds nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal -- especially because General Wolfgang Edel, his boss in the Bundeswehr, is a West German official with top secret intel and a father with a complicated family life. Edel's rebellious son, Alex, is forced into a military career against his will, while his daughter, Yvonne, rebels by joining the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh cult. This series, the first German-language TV series to air on a US network, had its exclusive world premiere during the inaugural Berlinale Special Series at the 65th Berlinale International Film Festival, as two episodes were screened in February 2015.
DEUTSCHLAND 86, the second season, follows Martin, his Aunt Lenora and their colleagues at the East German foreign intelligence agency (HVA). Long banished to Africa for his sins in 1983, Martin Rauch is called back into the field. Dark deals and a dangerous mission lead him to South Africa, Angola, Libya, Paris, West Berlin and finally back to East Berlin, where he must make an impossible decision. Season 2 premiered on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Midnight ET/PT on SundanceTV. In the season opener, "Tar Baby," after an arms deal goes south, Lenora brings Martin to Cape Town to help smooth things over until he sabotages the deal on moral grounds, putting her and Rose's lives in danger.

Season 3 of this series, DEUTSCHLAND 89, opens when the "anti-fascist" Berlin Wall falls on November 9th, 1989, superspy Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) gets involved and must deal with the consequences. The peaceful revolution has thrown his world into turmoil. He and his fellow agents at the HVA (East German Foreign Intelligence) are reeling. Their government has collapsed, their organization is in chaos and their futures are uncertain, at best. How to play the next hand? Join Big Brother at the KGB? Go West and work for an enemy agency? Use international contacts to begin a new career? Or run off to paradise with hoarded gold? SundanceTV debuted DEUTSCHLAND 89 on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11pm ET/PT, debuting back-to-back episodes to kick off the third season.
