Plot Synopsis

DARK SIDE OF THE '90S, the third series in VICE's DARK SIDE franchise, takes a deep dive into the decade's untold history, revealing secrets, and perspectives. The series opener, "Trash TV: Dirty and Deadly Talk," chronicles how talk television in the 1990s evolved from the cerebral DONAHUE show to the trashy JERRY SPRINGER, creating a new format that fused combustive relationships, shock and violence to entertain the masses.

On Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 9pm ET/PT, VICE premiered the 10-episode second season of DARK SIDE OF THE '90S. In the season opener, "Arseniooo Hall!," Arsenio Hall carves out a niche in the white, late-night world by showcasing hip-hop artists and emerging talent. Despite his success, he becomes a casualty in the late-night wars. Other Season 2 subjects include: MTV & The Real World; Cops -- Bad Boys, Bad Boys; and more.

Season 3 of DARK SIDE OF THE '90S debuted on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 10pm ET/PT on VICE. The 10-episode third season begins with "Tyson: The Rise and Fall of Kid Dynamite," which highlights how Mike Tyson reshaped boxing, while becoming a pop culture sensation who was feared for his violence and seeming invincibility. But in the end, he'll face the greatest opponent of his life: himself. Additional episodes focus on: '90s TV like FRIENDS, NYPD BLUE, SNL, and informercials; additional entertainers and athletes like Andre Agassi and the Spice Girls; and the hedonistic escapism offered by underground raves, strip clubs, and more.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 10pm ET/PT, VICE premiered "Rave Culture: Under the Influence," the Season 3 finale of DARK SIDE OF THE '90S. Rave culture is an euphoric cocktail of electronic dance music, synthetic party drugs, and optimism; where there are drugs there is also exploitation, violence, and moral panic.
