Plot Synopsis

This semi-autobiographical sitcom follows Cristela, a sixth-year law student, who is trying to modernize at home with her working-class, traditional Mexican-American family while also trying to embrace the modern world as she pursues her professional career. Cristela's sister, Daniela, loves having Cris live at her house because she takes care of Daniela's kids, Henry and Isabella, but Daniela's husband, Felix, impatiently awaits the day Cristela will move out. Felix owns a flooring installation business, and while he's okay with women working, he still believes it's a woman's job to raise the kids and clean the house. Cristela is finally on the brink of landing her first big internship, but her family thinks she's being too ambitious. Daniela wants her to come work for her cable-company call center, where she can actually get paid. Her mother, Natalia, wishes she would just give up the dream and settle down, preferably with someone just like Felix. Cristela may lack family support, but she makes up for it by approaching every situation with gusto, having learned that nothing that's worth having ever comes easy. And things begin to turn around for Cristela when Trent Culpepper, who is unapologetically politically incorrect about Latinos and just about everyone else, offers her an internship at his prestigious firm. She'll be working (unpaid) with Trent's pampered daughter Maddie and good-natured fellow intern Josh with whom she bonds over their love of the law and their work ethic.

On Friday, April 17, 2015 at 8:30pm ET/PT, ABC premiered the Season 1 finale of CRISTELA. In the season ender, "Movin' On Up," Cristela, Maddie and Josh eagerly await the results of the bar exam. Much to everyone's surprise, Maddie passes while Josh does not. Cristela also passes the exam and Trent offers her an attorney position at his law firm that comes along with an added perk of hiring an assistant. Faced with moving back in with his parents, Josh eagerly accepts the assistant gig. An ecstatic Cristela returns home to celebrate, but is lovingly confronted by Daniela who wants Cristela to move out and start living the life of a single girl, the life she deserves.
