Plot Synopsis
In Victorian London, William Rackham escapes his dreary existence by finding solace with Sugar, a prostitute yearning for a better life and craving the freedom to make a living using her brain rather than her body. William is a failed writer reluctant to join his father's perfume business, and his homelife holds little joy as he looks after his wife, Anges, whose mental health is rapidly declining. Learning about Sugar, William tracks her down and instantly falls under her spell, but he doesn't know that when she's not working, she pens a dark, gothic novel in which a prostitute takes revenge on all the men who have wronged her. Sugar also has a keen business sense, and often counsels William about his business, as well as giving him the emotional support that his wife can no longer provide. While mourning the death of her friend, who was beaten by two brothel customers, Sugar exploits William's desire for companionship, and moves into his house under the guise of being his daughter's guardian. How will their relationship develop? Encore aired the U.S. premiere of this four-part miniseries on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 8pm ET, showing the first two parts the first night and the last two parts the following night.
