Plot Synopsis

Described by its host, activist Sophia Roe, as a "food news show," COUNTER SPACE is a half-hour series series that explores how the world interacts with, affects, and is affected by food. COUNTER SPACE debuted on Thanksgiving Day 2020 (Thursday, November 25) from Noon-2pm, as VICE debuted four back-to-back episodes:

"Hong Kong Protest Food" (Noon): Political dissent finds expression in food; Sophia cooks fishballs and curry sauce; meeting a chef who wrote a protest cookbook; a Black woman making a statement by foraging.

"Spain's Table Steaks" (12:30pm): Exploring the future of meat from aging oxen to 3D printed steaks; Sophia elevates beef with compound butter; vegan butcher; Venezuelan making a Trump Burger.

"Yemen's Conflict Coffee" (1pm): Coffee from a war zone comes to Michigan; Sophia bakes glazed coffee bundt cakes; meeting the Monk of Mokha; a social experiment in Black history with black coffee.

"France Dying on the Vine" (1:30pm): Champagne makers dealing with the pandemic; Sophia cooks fennel crusted pork with champagne and grape sauce; meeting a bubbly empress; Taji hangs with a boozy treat dealer.

To finish its eight-episode first season, COUNTER SPACE then moves to its regular timeslot -- Saturdays at 11am -- beginning November 28 through December 19, as Sophia travels to Mexico, Lebanon, Russia, and more.
