Plot Synopsis
CLEVERMAN is a one-hour drama rooted in Aboriginal mythology, depicting a deeply conflicted and anxious society, fearful of a minority group living among them, endowed with extraordinary physical traits. One young man -- The Cleverman -- struggles with his own power and the responsibility to unite this divided world, but he must first overcome a deep estrangement from his older brother. Keon West comes from a deeper place, a darker one: the product of an affair between an Aboriginal father and white mother and orphaned in a car accident, Koen was born alone. He's an outsider; caught between two worlds, two cultures. Blamed and bullied by his half-brother Waruu for the death of their father, Koen turned his back on his community, and chose to live a totally separate life. As a result, he's learned to look out for Number One -- if there's nothing in a situation that's going to benefit him personally, Koen's not interested. He's an irresponsible hedonist who doesn't trust anyone except his best mates, Blair and Ash. Though he is aware of his Aboriginality, Koen is not connected to his culture, in fact he actively denies it. He has no language and only a limited understanding of The Dreaming. That's not to say he won't use his color to his advantage when it suits him. It's handy playing the brother card when he's trying to scam a Hairyperson. The series opens when a series of unexplained violent attacks in the city are blamed on the newly discovered "Hairypeople," who have been living among the rest of society. After its world premiere in the United States on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, CLEVERMAN debuted in Australia the following night. On Wednesday, June 27, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT, SundanceTV premiered the six-episode season season of CLEVERMAN. Season 2 picks up with the destruction of the Zone and the Hairypeople hiding out of fear for their lives. Koen, the chosen Cleverman, sets out to harness his powers in the hope of bringing all cultures together. His half-brother Waruu shares the same vision, but his method is far more dubious. For Koen to realize his mission, he must defeat Waruu and the full force of the Government, both which are united against him.
