Plot Synopsis
Two detectives -- the strong yet compassionate local Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller and the by-the-book Detective Inspector Alec Hardy -- partner to solve the murder of a young boy in a British seaside town, while keeping the newspapers from derailing the investigation and preventing the crime from impacting the town's tourism. The body of 11-year-old Danny Latimer is found on the beach in Broadchurch, and local police officers DI Hardy and DS Miller are called to investigate the crime. As the mystery around Danny's death deepens, DI Hardy and DS Miller work fast to identify the key suspects, while the Latimer family copes with their loss. When the investigation drags, Beth and Mark Latimer take matters into their own hands to get news of their son's murder into the newspaper, and they turn to a local priest, Rev. Paul Coates, to help them move on with their lives. By the end of the first season -- when the town comes together to mourn Danny -- the final piece of the puzzle falls into place, and Danny's killer is revealed. Three days after BROADCHURCH had its Canadian premiere on Sunday, August 4, 2013, BBC America aired the U.S. premiere of this series on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 10pm ET/PT, as part of its "Dramaville" programming block. On Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT, BBC America aired the U.S. premiere of Season 2 of BROADCHURCH. After a tumultuous investigation into the shocking murder of 11-year-old Daniel Latimer in Season 1, a killer was finally named. Now, Broadchurch is still reeling and the case of young Danny Latimer is far from over. The second season follows two seemingly unconnected events: the trial of Joe Miller (the man charged for Danny's murder) and the Sandbrook case -- Detective Inspector Alec Hardy's previously failed investigation, which has dogged his existence ever since. Though all expect a swift sentencing, there are still undeniable discrepancies and more secrets hidden among the townspeople. At the same time, Hardy's past comes back to haunt him when his primary suspect in the Sandbrook homicide resurfaces, looking for the woman who testified against him. The third and final season of BROADCHURCH premiered on BBC America on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT. Season 3 sees the detective duo Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller and Detective Inspector Alec Hardy investigate a serious sexual assault that shocks the tight-knitted seaside town to its core. Executive Producer Jane Featherstone on the new case: "We start the final season in the trilogy three years on from the last season, five years on from the start. There is a bold, new crime story, which forces us to ask whether the town has a crack running through it caused by Danny Latimer's death; is this new crime somehow the long-term legacy of that dark moment? Our central characters must contend with this possibility as they battle to make hope, friendship and love triumph over fear and suspicion, as a host of new suspects present themselves. The great privilege of long-form storytelling is building a meaningful relationship between our characters and the audience, and I am excited for the audience to see how Ellie, Hardy and the Latimers have fared in the last few years. It is a fond farewell for those of us involved in the series for so many years, but as far as I am concerned, the community of Broadchurch will carry on living long after we've gone."
