Plot Synopsis

BIG GIANT SWORDS is a one-hour reality series that follows sword maker Irish Mike, his trusty sidekick AmeriMike and a motley crew of artists and builders, as these masters of steel bring to life the stuff of fairytales and legends. Irish Mike has been designing life-sized replicas of weapons inspired by video games and 80s fantasy sci-fi movies, and this YouTube sensation was launched into the spotlight after he was commissioned to make a life-sized, ornamental replica of a sword from Final Fantasy 7. From solely making replica swords, Mike's business now focuses on his own original designs. At around $2,000 a pop and some swords weighing up to 80 pounds and coming in at 6 feet long, Irish Mike is used to taking his time to create these functional, metal masterpieces. But in order to make his passion a full-time gig, some changes have to be made. With a new business model calling for two swords a week, Irish Mike assembled a sword building team of questionable craftsmen and women, picked from the best, or rather, only candidates available on Martha's Vineyard, where he is based. His team includes: Amerimike, an avid game who has lived his entire life on the island of Martha's Vineyard and became friends with Irish Mike through their mutual love of role-playing games; Erik, who moved to the island at age 10 is learning on the job working part time for Irish Mike, improving his welding skills; Jamie, who went to art school to study silversmithing, but while there she discovered the blacksmith shop; Jonny, a farmer who is also handy with tools and knows how to fix motorcycles and ATVs, making him the go-to guy for weapons tests; his wife, Amelia, who he met at a science fiction/fantasy convention; and Matthew, an 11th grader who spends one day a week helping to make gigantic swords, as Irish Mike's apprentice.

On Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT, Discovery premiered the Season 1 finale of BIG GIANT SWORDS. In the season ender "The Destroyer," Irish Mike is hired to make a 34-inch sword for the world's tallest sword swallower. Mike's patience is tested when an obnoxious client keeps altering his order. Amelia has long-awaited news about the business's profitability.
